?? Father's Day is approaching, and Carlos is thinking about buying him a coffee maker he's been drooling over for months. He finds the perfect page, they send it to him in 3 days, with plenty of time, and he can even add a personalized message: perfect plan. Finally, the package arrives, but oh boy... what a surprise he gets when he opens it and sees that he's received a Harry Potter book by mistake. ?? ???? He has 2 days left to return it and ask for the coffee maker he had bought, so he contacts the company by email. ?? Monday arrives, the gift company still shows no signs of life, and Carlos's father is left without a coffee maker. In the end, he ends up buying the typical gift, a cologne, and forgets about the issue. One sunny day in August, he opens his email inbox almost by accident and finds a message from the company that, after 4 months, has finally bothered to respond and offers to send him the famous lost coffee maker. By then, and although Carlos initially thought it was a company with great initiative, he had already lost trust in the brand, and the company had lost a customer. Or two, counting the person who missed out on their awaited Harry Potter book. ?? ?? Definitely not a #CustomerCentric company. ?? And you might wonder, what's that? Well, those are companies that align the company with the needs of the customers. ?? It seems like everyone "does" it, right? This year, I made the effort to begin my Christmas shopping list planning EARLY...like in January. I was frustrated with trying to find the perfect gifts and getting into Nov-Dec without any good ideas. So, I made the conscious effort to pay more attention to conversations with these individuals - their wants, interests, hobbies, passions - and started a list on my phone to capture ideas throughout the year. The items listed above and this t-shirt are some of the ideas on my list for this Christmas. Why did I share this? Because this is how WE SHOULD ALL BE LISTENING TO OUR CUSTOMERS...whether you already have their business and are engaged in ongoing discussions - or you are simply in prospecting mode and developing relationships for long-term. When we REALLY LISTEN and pay attention through conversations, research, meeting feedback, or their social posts...it can provide VALUABLE INSIGHT into their needs and wants. Things aren’t memories, they are simply triggers for memories. I’m not a big fan of most souvenirs, but I do want to have memory triggers. I avoid items that are bulky, expensive, cheaply made, etc. In the moment, it seems like a wonderful idea, and there is a reason so many places have you exit through the gift shop. They’re banking on you making emotional purchases. So, what I like to do is to collect stickers from places we visit and put them on my water bottle. Everytime I use the water bottle I’m reminded of that fun event. Over time I will replace things that might be redundant, but eventually I’ll run out of room or the stickers will fade, etc. This video will then become my trigger for those happy memories. (Or pictures of it as it changes.) So, if you’re struggling to let go of clutter that is sentimental, remember first that the item itself isn’t the memory. There are a number of different ways to go about it and I’d be happy to talk to you about any specific issue you might be having. Sometimes it’s helpful to get a neutral point of view.
