Did you know crime erodes the tax base of a community? An increase in 1,000 crimes per 100,000 in a population was associated with the decline of housing values of $9,000 per house. In a community with 10,000 homes this would amount to a $90,000 reduction in tax base. as crime, erodes the tax base of a community that can be significant reductions and funds for education and other public services and infrastructure. The Family Financial Protection Act (#SB1595) passed in the legislature and is now headed to the Governor's desk! The bill is a HUGE win, providing needed relief for Oregon families! It improves outdated and ?awed consumer protection and debt laws, protecting Oregonians while they pay o? debt or ?ght unfair collections. These protections include: ?? Increases wages protected from garnishment ?? Safeguards $2,500 in someone's bank account to cover basic needs while paying off debt ?? Increases protections to prevent loss of housing during debt collections ?? Improves protections for consumers under the Unfair Debt Collection Practices Act, increasing the time consumers have to ?le a complaint to 3 years ?? Protects consumers from paying unfair attorney fees resulting from civil lawsuits for unlawful collection practices. #Mississippi faces numerous systemic issues—healthcare, banking, education—all suffering from leadership that prioritizes private gain over public well-being. The consequences of this approach are evident: over $7 million in taxpayer funds directed towards improvements in private country club neighborhoods while #JacksonsWaterCrisis remains unresolved and rural communities continue to lack #broadband access. In Jackson, nearly 150,000 residents are still at risk from failing water infrastructure, despite receiving $800 million in federal funds meant to address these issues. Meanwhile, rural areas across the state, where 66.4% of the population resides, continue to struggle with broadband access, with over 109,000 locations still unserved. Yet, millions of dollars have been allocated for infrastructure improvements in private developments instead of addressing these critical needs. Programs like Jackson-Hinds Comprehensive Health Center, which serves over 46,000 patients annually, Mississippi Coding Academies, which aims to prepare the state's youth for high-demand tech jobs, and Cooperation Jackson, which focuses on community-led economic empowerment, all represent opportunities to make meaningful progress. These initiatives could benefit significantly from state funding, accelerating improvements for #MississippiInfrastructure and securing a better future for its #youth. Instead, these areas that are #LackingInLeadership align with the public-facing goals of state politicians, while backroom deals and self-serving priorities persist in maintaining their own wealth and comfort. This disparity is not just unfortunate—it is a betrayal of public trust. Everyone deserves equal power under the law. In the year since cash bail has been outlawed in Illinois, there’s been a 11% decrease in Cook County jail populations. The Shriver Center on Poverty Law helped pass the Pretrial Fairness Act in 2021 as part of the Coalition to End Money Bond. It went into effect in September 2023, making Illinois the first state in the nation to ban cash bail. Under the old system of cash bail, income and assets determined if someone could pay for their freedom. This led to unfair pretrial detention based on someone’s ability to afford bail — now, this is determined by the risk they pose to the community instead. Nearly every interaction a person has with the justice system comes with a bill regardless of one’s innocence. From being arrested and navigating the court system, to being incarcerated and released back into society, our legal system is wrought with hidden fees. For millions of Americans, court debt overshadows every aspect of their and their families lives. As FFJC Co-Executive Director Joanna Weiss shared with The New York Times, “Court debt impacts more people and for a longer period of time than almost any other issue in the criminal justice system. It’s a lifelong punishment, and the consequences are felt by the entire family.” Court imposed fees are linked to increased recidivism and decreased public safety, and wreak havoc on communities nationwide.
