We heard that Los Alamos became a Bee City, so we were wondering, what does that exactly means? ?? The title "Bee City" in the United States implies that the city has taken specific measures to protect and promote the health of bees and other pollinators. This title is granted by Bee City USA: a non-profit organization that works to encourage pollinator conservation in communities across the country. Being designated as a Bee City implies that the city has made concrete commitments, such as creating pollinator habitats, reducing the use of toxic pesticides, public education on the importance of pollinators, and adopting policies that favor their protection. In summary, a Bee City is committed to promoting and protecting the health of bees and other pollinators through concrete actions and public awareness of their importance to ecosystems and agriculture. Did you know that? https://lnkd.in/ddGQdjwA

During National Tree Week ten local Coventry apple trees grafted by Coventry Tree Wardens as part of Growing Connections project’s pilot community tree nursery, were requested by Coventry City Council ecologists and planted in an old orchard area at Coventry’s Lake View Park, with Warwickshire Wildlife Trust team, volunteers and CAWR’s Growing Connections project researchers. The Growing Connections project investigates the potential of alternative, more agroecological approaches to tree production in which many small community tree nurseries produce a diverse range of locally sourced, locally adapted trees: https://bit.ly/3tCyOPX

Our new open-access paper is out in the latest Pachyderm issue! ?? https://lnkd.in/g5dB4jwg We used participatory processes to understand how farmers conceptualize human #elephant coexistence, which then informed how we co-designed community workshops with local experts. We then developed 5 strategies to help mitigate negative human-elephant interactions. Understanding how to move from data collection with ecosystem actors to implementing sustainable solutions is vital to promote #HumanElephantCoexistence! #Conservation #ConservationBiology #CommunityConservation

Ohio Legislature passes bill to promote native plants throughout state The Ohio Legislature passed legislation that allows individuals, conservation organizations and non-profits, to collect and share native plant seeds with other like-minded organizations. This will encourage groups and individuals to plant more native plants and create more native plant habitats to ensure Ohio’s natural spaces thrive. The Ohio House passed?HB 364?on a unanimous vote in June. The Ohio Senate followed suit on Dec. 19 on a vote of 30-0. The legislation, at press time, was awaiting Gov. Mike DeWine’s signature. “I want to thank lawmakers in the Ohio House and Senate for passing this commonsense legislation,” said?Mary Turocy, director of policy and government relations for The Nature Conservancy?(TNC) in Ohio. “Once signed into law, this will have a significant impact on efforts throughout the state to remove invasive plants and replace them with plants native to Ohio, provide more habitat to threatened insects and even help individuals who want to create their?own pollinator garden.”… Continue reading https://lnkd.in/gFXe8f3R

Why?are we creating habitat for great crested newts? ?? Great crested newts are the largest of the UK’s three native species?of newt?and are a great indicator of the health of a water source – they will travel up to 1km to find the right pond. Over the last 100 years, great crested newts have disappeared from many sites right across Europe, mainly because of pond loss and intensive agriculture. Alongside delivering Natural England's own District Level Licensing scheme, we are working with Nature Space Partnership NatureSpace Partnership (NSP) and Newt Conservation Partnership Newt Conservation Partnership (NCP) to share knowledge and evaluate the outcomes of the schemes. NCP create and restore ponds for great crested newts under the NSP District Licensing scheme. Monitoring of the partnership’s ponds already shows they are supporting great crested newts and a variety of freshwater invertebrates.
