An insightful discussion on NGTs and agriculture at KU Leuven Plant Institute This past Friday, the KU Leuven Plant Institute had the privilege of welcoming MEP Kathleen Van Brempt and Bruno Tobback. Our meeting focused on New Genome Techniques (NGTs) and their critical role in shaping a sustainable future for European agriculture. Our conversation explored the science and history of NGTs, highlighting their potential to enhance agricultural resilience and sustainability. With MEP Van Brempt and Mr. Tobback, we examined important policy considerations such as labeling and traceability, and the impact on organic farming. The dialogue bridged academic research and policy, highlighting the importance of evidence-based approaches to agricultural innovation. Simon Fraser University's two co-led genomics hubs are advancing innovation in Canadian agriculture, helping to reduce the industry's carbon footprint and promote sustainable food systems. These initiatives recently received a $15.8 million boost in federal and partner funding, including $6.6 million from the federal government for the Climate-Smart Data Collaboration Centre and the Agricultural Genomics in Action Centre, funded through Genome Canada. Today at #Landscape2024 conference (ZALF) with keynote by Fran?ois Chrétien, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada) on the transformative impact of #agrifood system #livinglab approach .Interestingly the presentation also shared insight on the evolving #role of #scientist and researchers, as a contributor and participant , - not the necessary lead or initiator of a 'living lab' in the innovation process in agri-food systems. Note also the emphasis on public sector research: the need for open and peer-reviewed new knowledge delivery. Lots of good lessons learned from Canada so we do not need to 're-invent wheels'.

I am excited to share my most recent publication: "Sustainable agricultural technologies of the future: Determination of adoption readiness for different consumer groups" in Technological Forecasting and Social Change. Together with my co-authors Alexander Schnack, Victoria-Sophie Osburg (Montpellier Business School) and Amy Errmann (Auckland University of Technology), I explore how to achieve food security through environmentally friendly methods such as controlled environment agriculture (CEA), genetic editing (GE), and farming automation (FA), emphasizing the importance of consumer acceptance of these technologies. Using a large-scale sample of Australians and New Zealanders, we categorize them based on their demographic and lifestyle preferences into three segments that capture differences in attitudes toward new agricultural technologies: “Green Urbanites,” “Environmentally Unconcerned,” and “Skeptical Foodies.” We further suggest strategies to increase engagement of the identified segments and promote wider acceptance of sustainable agricultural practices for enhanced food security. This great project allowed me to explore and learn about a new research domain with many practical applications to safeguard the future of food security. As we envision the role of agriculture in the next 25 years, Edward O. Wilson's concept of consilience offers an exciting framework for envisioning the future. In his groundbreaking book Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge (initially published in 1998), Wilson advocates for integrating knowledge across disciplines to address complex challenges, a crucial principle for agriculture's future. The concept of consilience - the "jumping together" of knowledge across disciplines to create explanation – emphasizes the importance of a unified approach combining insights from biology, ecology, technology, and the social sciences. Wilson’s framework asserts that all branches of knowledge, from the natural sciences to the humanities, are fundamentally interconnected and can be integrated into a cohesive worldview. He calls for increased collaboration and dialogue between ‘hard’ scientists and scholars in the social sciences and humanities to break down disciplinary silos. How can consilience help shape agriculture's future? Here are a few thoughts: Precision Agriculture: By integrating data science, robotics, plant biology, and human behavior, precision agriculture can optimize crop yields and resource efficiency. This approach reflects Wilson's idea of using scientific rigor to address practical challenges. Agroecology and Biodiversity: Wilson's advocacy for biodiversity and ecological principles leads to more resilient farming systems that protect and enhance the environment?and make the business of agriculture more resilient. His emphasis on preserving biodiversity aligns with sustainable agricultural practices that enhance ecosystems. Biotechnology and Genetic Research: Wilson's work highlights the potential of biotechnology, such as genomics and synthetic biology, to develop climate-resilient crops. This consilient approach can help address food security in the face of climate change. Environmental Policy and Ethics: Wilson stresses the integration of environmental policy and ethics, advocating for a holistic view that considers the long-term impacts of agricultural practices on the environment and society. Systems Thinking and Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Wilson's call for collaboration across disciplines encourages the development of models that consider the complex interactions between farms, ecosystems, markets, and climate. This systems thinking is essential for creating sustainable agricultural policies. Wilson's consilient approach provides a blueprint for innovation and sustainability in agriculture. By embracing this holistic perspective, we can ensure that agriculture continues to thrive and support human civilization in the coming decades. ?? New Innovation Center for Agricultural System Transformation (IAT): Advancing sustainable farming with research in living labs! ?? ZALF has secured €9.5M annually to establish the Innovation Center for Agricultural System Transformation (IAT) in partnership with Justus Liebig University Giessen, University of Kassel, and Geisenheim University. The Joint Science Conference approved the funding on 22 November. Within the new IAT, practical agricultural research will be promoted in five new living laboratories in Hesse and Brandenburg from 2026. Key highlights: ?? 70 new staff positions and 9 professorships, ?? Living labs focusing on climate-resilient viticulture & organic farming, ??
