I’m fascinated by the links between wellbeing and performance in the workplace. For example, did you know that engaging in physical activity before work increases the likelihood that we’ll view difficult tasks as challenges rather than threats? Subsequently, this can decrease "threat appraisal”, reducing anxiety and boosting engagement (PMID:?37561472). ? Recent research also indicates that physical activity boosts sleep quality, energy, and task focus (Li et al., 2023). These benefits translate into enhanced job performance the next day. After a number of years of working in mental health and wellbeing, the core principle I've always centred my work on is "meet them where they are at". A person centred approach is a fundamental pillar. It must be the same when we look at workplace wellbeing. There is no point jumping in to "fix" something, when you dont know where the cracks are. Throwing in a "wellbeing incentive" because it's what everyone's talking about isn't helping anyone. The first step in your workplace wellbeing strategy must be, where are we now? "Where are we now" looks at: the fundamentals including your vision and mission and how they align with objective's and values. It looks at how individuals contribute and embed into the workplace culture. It looks at staff morale, staff engagement, feedback and turnover, it also looks at absenteeism, presenteesim, attitude to work, productivity, etc... Then after that, you can ask, ok so what are we doing now to mitigate the risk of all those issues? Is that working? Who has benefited? What has the impact been? How was the impact measured? What qualitative employee data are we working with? What about the output numbers? Have we done a focus group? What's been the feedback? ... The core of any strategy must be the reason behind it, and the reason can't be because it ticks boxes for anyone looking in. Wellbeing initiatives are great, but the delivery must be in response to the real needs and challenges faced by employees. It's not about following trends or meeting external expectations; it's about authentically addressing the issues that impact the daily lives and experiences of those within the organisation. Do you start off in a good mood and then the first thing that doesn’t go to plan, throws you off course for the day? What thoughts do you allow through the gate as you wake and realise, yep it’s another work day and is that frame of mind setting you up for a good day? Do you see where I’m going?...... I don’t think workplace wellbeing is a complex algorithm or a secret handshake you need to discover. I think workplace wellbeing starts with you and is simple as how you treat others and yourself. How you choose to experience each interaction in the day and the emotions you feel, from the meaning you are giving each interaction. What if you decided to switch off auto-pilot and take control of how you were going to choose to be, in the day. I think improving workplace wellbeing starts with you; being compassionate, kind, helpful and non-judgmentally experiencing each interaction as it is. Cut yourself some slack when things go awry, and extend that courtesy to your co-workers. Smile lots. Connect with your colleagues. Listen to understand. Be the best version of you. A workplace built on compassion is not just a pleasant place to be; it's a breeding ground for productivity and innovation.
