This week’s WTOP News #SmallBusinessSeptember feature highlights our relationship with Kingdom Fellowship AME Church, one of the fastest-growing churches in the U.S., according to Outreach Magazine. Founder and senior pastor Rev. Matthew Watley shares, “Oftentimes, we have to help people to understand our scale, scope, and capacity. Thankfully, we don’t need to have that conversation when it comes to working with EagleBank.” Our appreciation for enterprises like this allows us to expertly navigate any and all unique challenges that arise. We’re proud to continue supporting Kingdom Fellowship as they grow and serve our community in a number of meaningful ways. Watch the full conversation between Rev. Matthew Watley and EagleBank’s 1st SVP and Market Executive, Terrence Beverly, below. #InspiringLeaders #CommunitySupport #SmallBusinessSupport #EagleBank #SmallBusinessBanking #NonprofitBanking #CommunityBank #ChurchLeadership

It’s easy to forget about the ripples. As? a geographically focused organization, FCS - Focused Community Strategies is laser-focused on just a few neighborhoods and how we can partner with the residents who live in them. I am often hyper-focused on this small geographic footprint, too. That’s why I was shocked when I walked into congressional offices on Hill Day with Purpose Built Communities and realized that our state-level leaders already knew of our work. Senator Ossoff has visited Community Grounds and Carver Market. Senator Warnock knew about FCS’ work. It was amazing. Humbling. This quiet, slow and steady work of reweaving the fabric of neighborhoods does not go unseen. With every step we take, we are making a broader impact. For those of you in this same type of work, I want to remind you of that, too. Your work to see neighbors flourish ripples outward, making a broader impact. And I know it’s not why you do the work, but I want you to know that people notice your efforts, too. None of us is doing this work alone. #placematters #placemaking #nonprofits #nonprofit #communitydevelopment #partnership

Marc's Remarks - Weekly insights, community news, and updates from our President and CEO. October 23, 2024 28 Out of 26,000! "I hope you are enjoying the Sukkot holiday, known as “z'man simchateinu,” or “season of our joy.” Sukkot is the only holiday in the Torah where we are not only invited to be joyful, we are obligated to do so. Being another short week due to the holidays, I want to share some important announcements: According to the IRS, there are over 26,000 nonprofit organizations operating in the State of Oregon. Last week, the Nonprofit Association of Oregon shared its list of the 100 Best Nonprofits to Work For in Oregon 2024. The list is divided into three categories: large (50+ employees), medium (25-49 employees), and small (up to 24 employees) organizations and each is given an overall score. I am enormously proud to share that the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland was ranked the 28th best nonprofit to work for in the state! In the “small nonprofit” category we were #18 (fitting for a Jewish organization). I am also pleased that BB360 (formerly BB Camp) was 80th overall in the state and #20 in the “medium nonprofit” category. Very impressive to have two Jewish organizations in the top 100 across Oregon. I hope we have many more in the years ahead. Pay attention to word choice when funders talk about grantees and the communities they support. I recently watched an explanation of the word "community" by a funder and it was that it "embraces everyone, regardless of race, identity, or circumstance". In reality, this is not true. Framing "community" as broadly embracing everyone, regardless of their individual identities, inherently (or by design) allows people to fall through the cracks. This colorblind approach is actually more harmful than it is helpful, despite the best intentions (remember, intentions don't matter if you're still harmful in the end). The best communities that I've been fortunate to be part of embrace everyone FOR their race, FOR their identity, and FOR their circumstance and meets them where they are at to make sure everyone is good. We don't all always need the same type of support and we don't always need the same level of support. Funders: Go to community meetings. Talk to residents that live in the neighborhoods you serve. Stop paying random white consultants in other states to conduct surveys that only reflect the response from the ~60 people who happened to attend your two poorly advertised community input sessions to tell the neighborhood something they already know in a report that gets published 8 months later. People are struggling now and they will gladly tell you exactly what they need if you give them the chance to feel like they have a voice and aren't just a number for your fancy reports. #nonprofits #philanthropy #grants #fundraising

Let’s talk about something that might not come up often but is super important: why churches need a strategic plan. Most of my network knows in addition to consulting nonprofits, I am also in Seminary pursuing my doctorate in social transformation. Every day, I see how leaders are trying to make sense of managing an organization, their congregants, and the community. That’s where a strategic plan comes in. Churches are more than just places of worship. They’re community hubs, support systems, and often, a second home for many. They are also nonprofits, and strategy is absolutely critical to leading an impactful nonprofit. Why should churches create a strategic plan? 1.?????Vision and Focus: It helps clarify the mission and set priorities, just like any other nonprofit. What do we want to achieve in the next year? Five years? A plan keeps everyone on the same page with their eyes on the same North Star. 2.?????Resource Management: The fact is, church resources are often quite limited. A strategic plan ensures that time and money are used effectively. 3.?????Community Engagement: Knowing the church’s big goals and how to reach them helps the church connect better with the community. A lot of churches focus so much on their sermons or their theology that they don’t stop to think about how they are presenting themselves to the community. Having a strategy gets everyone on the same page. It opens doors for more meaningful outreach and support. 4.?????Adaptability: The world is constantly changing. A strategic plan helps churches adapt and respond proactively to new challenges and opportunities, while also remaining adaptive for changing demographics and new ways of believing and worshipping. 5.?????Accountability: With clear goals and milestones, it’s easier to track progress and celebrate wins. It also keeps everyone accountable, from leadership to congregation members. #church #churchleadership #strategicplanning #organizationaldevelopment #spiritualleadership

I want to see more neighborhoods flourish. At the same time, I am sensitive to the ways that growing too fast can damage the most important part of this work: developing trusting relationships with neighbors, whose voices guide us. Yes, we want to produce more affordable housing units, create more well-paying jobs, and increase the reach of services and partnerships. But if we aren’t listening to neighbors, the chances that we miss the mark when we try to build those homes, create those jobs, and expand those amenities get higher and higher. As a leader with a personality that wants to make good things happen, resisting my need to move more quickly can be one of the most challenging aspects of my work.? Going fast from a sense of urgency or even a “We can do more, so we should do more” mentality can do long-term damage to vital relationships in the neighborhood (let alone with staff). #nonprofits #leadership #neighborhood #neighborhoodbased #communitydevelopment #placemaking #nonprofit

As we continue #MakeAWill month, we understand structuring estate and financial plans to leave just the “right” amount to children can be tough. According to the Rutgers University Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, the Transfer of Wealth opportunity for #SouthJersey from 2025 to 2060 is estimated to range between $318.3 billion and $462.9 billion, depending on immigration and income growth scenarios. A 5% giveback could create $15.9 billion to $23.2 billion in new community endowments, generating $795 million to $1.16 billion annually in new grants. #NonProfit #Philanthropy
