Ever have a moment where a long standing belief turned out to be wrong? That just happened to me about startup hiring. I remember growing up and thinking about how startup founders talked about hiring young talent. These founders (also in their 20’s) would talk about how they hired young talent because once you get older you’re not “fast” or “agile” enough for the business. They needed the really talented folks which you can only find in new grads. I took this at face value and didn’t think much about it. Then I heard Peter Thiel talk about why he recommended startups hire 20-somethings: - It wasn’t because they were faster - It wasn’t because they were more talented - It wasn’t because they were more loyal It’s because they were cheaper and untested, increasing the chances of you getting a good deal. That makes sense. So what were the founders talking about when they said they prefer young talent? They were coping. Plain and simple. And doing some clever PR to make people want to join their company. But mostly coping. I am doing my best to stop taking things people say at face value because of this.
