It’s an excellent platform for horror filmmakers looking to connect and collaborate. 3. Fantasia International Film Festival If you're a genre filmmaker, Fantasia International Film Festival should be on your radar. Located in Montreal, this festival celebrates all things fantastic in cinema, with a strong emphasis on horror. Fantasia is a haven for horror enthusiasts and offers filmmakers an opportunity to present their work to a passionate audience that truly appreciates the genre. 4. Los Angeles Film Festival The Los Angeles Film Festival is another fantastic option for filmmakers. Situated in the heart of the entertainment industry, this festival is perfect for connecting with industry insiders. How do you find a distributor for your film? We believe film distributors are like aliens and are difficult to find, but the truth is that filmmakers are looking in the wrong places. Filmmakers hang out in film festivals, and film distributors hang out in film markets. Film festivals and film markets are two different things that occasionally come together. I am not saying film festivals are not important for your film, but it’s not guaranteed that your film will make it to the other side and reach a broader audience. Distribution is the way to go when it comes to reaching your audience and making money. It can be traditional or DIY distribution; you decide that, but what better way to learn about this topic than to bring in an expert? I am running a Spotlight Session, Ask the Experts, with an international distributor on September 24th. Mauricio has worked 37 years in the industry and ran Universal Studios Latinoamerica. He has overseen the theatrical release of over 1,800 films, including more than 100 blockbusters. What happens when you have a great community film festival in its 11th year, local service clubs on a big mission to make a difference in their community, a local college with loads of outdoor space and incredible film producers & animation program, a theatre and dedicated volunteers who are passionate about their organizations and community impact? These are the ingredients for a powerful collaboration, and community events that bring people together, make memories, and create a big impact. As a professional that teaches collaboration and works on a number of projects that bring community partners together, I know the powerful impact that can result from a common goal, dedicated people, innovation and a mindset of working together instead of working against one another. So, here’s the backstory and the case study I want to share with you. June 19-25 marked the 11th year for Oakville Festivals of Film and Art (OFFA), a festival with more than 100 films screened during the festival week including gala red-carpet events, a National Indigenous Peoples Day event, outdoor family fun screenings, a series of virtual screenings, two solid days of films and Q and A sessions with filmmakers at OFFA’s venue sponsor Film.Ca Cinemas Inc., an industry summit for filmmakers and more! At the same time as the OFFA festival, the annual Oakville Family Ribfest was also taking place at Sheridan College Trafalgar Road campus. The Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar joined forces with the Oakville Lions Club for this years’ Ribfest. In many communities having two large and prominent events with overlap dates could have created competition, working in silos, and other challenges. I have seen that happen many times in different communities over the past 25 years, but, Not in Oakville! OFFA quickly reached out to the Rotary Club hosting the Oakville Family Ribfest to explore synergies and how they could collaborate. On that call OFFA discovered the Rotary Club also partnered with the Lions Club, and Film.ca Cinemas and Sheridan College (Film.ca Cinemas and Sheridan Collage are also shared sponsors), what a great opportunity to work together with Ribfest and create even more value for the shared sponsors and partners and the community! It didn’t take long for their first planning call to turn into a great collaboration with a Dinner and a Movie contest and a great week of film at the Oakville Film Festival and screenings at film.ca Cinemas. Their collaboration resulted in a contest that both organizations shared on social media and in newsletters, as well as on their website. What a great example of shared and collaborative marketing efforts. I’ve been doing this work for a long time and have been a part of or led many community partnerships and am celebrating these organizations for coming together to make a difference – what a great example of community spirit, collaboration and making a difference together! PRO TIP: Research festivals before applying!? Once you finish your film, submission fees for festivals can really add up. There are websites that allow you to apply to multiple festivals - I like to use FilmFreeway.com - but even if you use?film freeway, do your research! Check how long the festival's been running, what types of films they showcase, and if your work fits in. Otherwise, you might just be throwing money away. Everyone’s talking about where the Sundance Film Festival will live in the future, but a more compelling question may be this: How do independent filmmakers plan to distribute their films and create real careers when even Sundance — wherever it may be based — is not enough? That’s not a knock on Sundance, or on any festival; it’s recognizance that the world has changed. Many films don’t sell, even at Sundance. The Misconception of "Making It": African Filmmakers at International Film Festivals and the Struggle for Recognition "Remember, you can't complain about being ignored by the press because you're African while simultaneously ignoring the press that is there specifically to cover you..." I'm writing this in the thick of awards season film festival coverage, with Venice and Toronto now behind us. My experiences during this relentless whirlwind of events reminded me of a persistent problem. The journey of African filmmakers through the labyrinth of major international film festivals is fraught with expectations and missed opportunities. The excitement of having a film selected for a prestigious event is often tempered by the reality of the festival's aftermath, where visibility and media engagement are critical yet elusive. There appears to be a prevailing belief that acceptance into a major international film festival means you've essentially "made it." This couldn't be further from the truth. In reality, festival placement is just the beginning of a crucial phase that demands strategic thinking, relentless promotion, and savvy media engagement. There is a disconnect between African filmmakers and producers whose films are selected, and the international press covering these events. It's a two-sided coin of frustration that needs to be addressed for the benefit of African cinema as a whole.
