Our historic churches are closing at an alarming rate across Scotland. From city neighbourhoods to rural villages, these buildings have served as sanctuaries and gathering places for centuries. But as the secular tide rises, congregations dwindle and incomes fall. Tough decisions must be made about which churches can be maintained. Many face an uncertain future. Scotland's Churches Trust have mapped the latest data on Church of Scotland buildings under threat. Red pins mark those already closed or sold since 2020. Amber pins show churches categorised as lower priority to retain. While some might shrug at the losses or rejoice at these "development opportunities", the Trust is urging you to pause. Consider the profound emotional toll on communities losing buildings inextricably woven into their histories and identities. Churches provide "envirogenic" benefits - comfort from their permanent presence, sanctuary when needed. Losing this anchor can damage community wellbeing. It's time to heed the late Sir James Dunbar-Nasmith's call: "It used to be the job of churches to save people; now it is the job of people to save churches."
