“Amorgorama is a unique example of cooperation between fishers, scientists, institutions, civil society, local and national authorities with the common goal of protecting the sea and the people that depend on her,” shares Blue Marine Foundation. “Its success will play a catalytic role in the way we protect the seas in Greece and will be a beacon of inspiration and optimism for other fishing communities in the Aegean.” Watch this short film on the inspiring story of the fishers of Amorgos. #GoodNewsForTheOcean

Just over a decade ago, the arapaima — a fish capable of growing up to 10 feet long and weighing up to 500 pounds — faced extinction, its numbers ravaged by overfishing. But conservation efforts spearheaded by local communities have turned things around, with arapaima numbers dramatically increasing across the Amazon ??. The arapaima’s resurgence is a conservation triumph that can serve as a blueprint for safeguarding other large aquatic species in the Amazon and globally, according to Brazilian ecologist and #NatGeoExplorer Jo?o Campos-Silva. And it highlights the crucial role of local communities in leading successful conservation endeavors. Campos-Silva works with communities along the Juruá River, a major Amazon tributary in western Brazil, as part of the National Geographic and ROLEX #PerpetualPlanet Amazon Expedition — a multi-year science and storytelling exploration of the Amazon River basin to further our understanding of this intricate freshwater system and advance solutions to ensure its protection. ???? On this World Penguin Day, we highlight the Galápagos Penguin, the world's only northerly penguin species found exclusively in the Galápagos islands. However, these penguins are facing challenges such as declining populations due to changing ocean conditions and the presence of introduced predators. ?? As we commemorate World Penguin Day, let's also recognize the importance of conservation efforts to protect these amazing birds and their marine ecosystem. Global collaboration and local commitment are essential to ensuring a secure future for the Galápagos Penguins. ?? https://lnkd.in/euXJJfWF

A MIRACULOUS recovery! ??? Often compared to mythical creatures, the saiga antelope's survival story is no less extraordinary. In 2005, Kazakhstan’s saiga population hit just 48,000. This year, thanks to bold efforts by the government, local communities, and NGOs, it’s soared to 1.9 million. With these ancient steppe dwellers edging back from the brink of extinction, plans to manage the sustainable trade of this ice-age species were discussed at the Convention on Migratory Species earlier this year. Stockpile management of saiga horn, widely used in traditional medicine, is critical to ensure sustainable, legal trade and safeguard the species' future. Their story is proof that conservation efforts can truly make a difference. ????
