It's "late arrival Wednesday" at our schools each week. Yeah, my reaction was also "WTF?" ?? The school district here has kids arrive an hour late each Wednesday... and it confused and frustrated the hell out of me when we first moved here. I couldn't understand why the schools would do such a thing! Must be some weird, outdated rule...? * Is this an old remnant from a farming community during harvest time? * An old blue law on the books that says teachers can't work before 8am... on the third day after Sunday? * Maybe it's so cold that school busses can't be in operation on Wednesday mornings before sunrise? It wasn't long before the excuses rolled in... "Oh, but it's Wednesday, mom, and we have an extra hour of sleep." "Yeah, but it's a delay tomorrow so I can do it in the morning." And I joined in with the thought of an extra hour of peace and quiet before running out the door... until I saw the opportunity. NOW? I have extra quality time with the boys. We talk about current events, life, and sometimes just silly things like their dad's and uncle's antics growing up. Today, I challenged the boys to think of a learning or growth goal that they could achieve by using this one hour dedicated to a topic or skill. My youngest taught himself piano during covid... what else could he learn in an hour each Wednesday? Oh & in case you're wondering why the schools do it: From what I understand it's to give the teachers a regular schedule of continued education for them. Instead of full teacher work days at arbitrary times, this district has this 1 hour each week at aside for teachers to learn. Kinda nice, huh? **** The old law in the image is still active in Massachusetts, according to: https://lnkd.in/gXv3DuHK ****

Slowing Down in Term Four: Embracing the Present As we weave our way into term four, many of us find our thoughts drifting toward the end of the year. We reflect on the months gone by and begin to anticipate celebrations, time with family and friends, and perhaps even the closure of our centres. This reflection, while well-intended (and often exciting), can leave us in a bit of a hurry. But what about now? In recent conversations with educators, I’ve been reminded of the importance of slowing down and being fully present. What really matters in our services between now and the end of the year? How do we ensure that our time with children, families, and each other truly counts? There’s still much ahead, and now is the perfect time to declutter—to revisit the year that was, pick up on the threads of learning that are still significant to children, and collect data that can inform new teaching and development. We have many weeks left, and each one offers a valuable opportunity to engage meaningfully. Sure, term four can feel busy, and yes, celebrating learning and significant local events is important. But here’s the thing: we get to choose how we do that, and we can involve children and families in those decisions. We don’t need to rush into preparing decorations, rehearsing songs, or wrapping 40 identical gifts. Instead, we can choose to sing the songs we’ve loved all year, showcase the artwork and documentation that’s evolved, and create spaces where children can craft gifts if they choose. We can shape these final weeks with intention and authenticity, reflecting the learning and growth that’s happened all year long. The question is: What choices of slow, presence, and involvement will you make between now and the end of the year? Let’s create space for what really matters. ?

tl;dr: I made you a summer reading list! When I was in school, one of the things I loved most about the end of the year were the summer reading lists. The list of books felt like such a promise – a summer of expansive time, to lounge in the grass or in a cool bedroom to read for hours. I always got lost in books as a child – it was permissive then, a world building immersion. As an adult, there might be a few too many tethers to the real world that pull me out of those worlds and into this one – but I still love a good reading list. (Eldest immigrant daughter, etc etc.) I'm excited to share THE PEOPLE'S SYLLABUS:?a reading list for a revolutionary summer.?You can find some of my favorites here, as well as the ones I'll be newly exploring this summer. These are the books that have most shaped my politic and my praxis, the books that have most invited me or challenged me. They are the books that have helped me bear witness, taught me grief and grit, and lent me hope and resilience. (We’ll be going deeper into these lessons in this summer’s THE PEOPLE’S HEALTH, a community of practice for rest and revolution, for burned out public health and health care workers.) Don't forget to support your local small bookstores and public libraries this summer – there’s nothing quite as perfect as walking from a sticky summer into the promising blast of air conditioning of a local public library. (Personally, I’d check out a gigantic stack and then go find a rainbow-sprinkled ice cream cone and yell at Eric Adams for defunding the NYPL, if I were you! ??) You can download THE PEOPLE’S SYLLABUS at the link in the comments. Happy reading!

Stop blaming society for things you were responsible for. No one's gonna appreciate you for scoring less or for not being disciplined. You can't expect appreciation without hustle, cause that will be babysitting. Honestly,I understood all this a little late. ?While I was in school,I really wanted to participate in various programmes/events/dance battles. But,wasn't able to do the same cause I lacked confidence not because Society told me not to participate. ?When I had pre-boards,I really wanted to be the best and to be the top scorer But wasn't able to achieve the same cause I wasn't disciplined enough not because Society took my books. Now that I try to inculcate as many good habits as I can, one thing that I realised was I was able to achieve alot just because of consistency and hard work. When I sleep with a relief of giving 100% at that particular day, Appreciation from others doesn't really bothers me. If others are intelligent/fit/successful. you can too. Just stop seeking validation.

Bill Gates was invited by a high school to give a lecture. ?????? He arrived by helicopter, took the paper from the pocket where he had written eleven items. He read everything in less than 5 minutes, was applauded for more than 10 minutes non-stop, thanked him and left in his helicopter. What was written is very interesting, read: Rule 1: Life is not fair, get used to it. Rule 2: The world does not care about your self esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something before you feel good about yourself. Rule 3: You will not make £100,000 straight after school, you won’t be a vice president with a car phone until you earn both. Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not below your dignity. Your grand parents had a different word for burger flipping: They called it opportunity. Rule 6: If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault, so don’t whinge about your mistakes – learn from them. Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now. They got that way by paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rainforest from the parasites of your parent’s generation, try tidying your bedroom. Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers but life has not. In some schools, they have abolished falling grades and they’ll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to anything in real life. Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don’t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time. Rule 10: Television is not real life, in real life people have to leave a coffee shop and go to jobs. Rule 11: Be nice to nerds, chances are you’ll end up working for one.??????????????
