My phone blew up today with news of Junior State of America (JSA) winding down after 90 years. For a '90s high school student, JSA was formative (I was a Mayor, a Lt. Governor, and went to Georgetown & Montezuma). What made JSA special? 1?? ?? ?? Diversity of people & ideas. NJ high school was ... beige, racially and intellectually. At JSA, kids (and their parents) came from all over the place, with ideas which were all over the place. The most diverse environment I experienced until - a decade later - HBS. 2?? ?? Travel. ?? DC, ?? NYC, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco. Without parents, and cell phones! Opened up new worlds for me. 3?? ?? Speaking and Conflict. Once upon a time I didn't like public speaking (I know, hard to believe). JSA's approach to debate taught not just public speaking & opposing ideas in public, but also building friendships & leaving public conflict behind when the debate was done. Unique in today's world. 4?? ?? Paperwork. Hear me out. JSA had a lot of paperwork -- Resolutions. Agendas. Membership rolls, all with minimal computers. Effectively navigating bureaucracy is perhaps the defining skill of adulting. Without even realizing it, I learned to do that in JSA. 5?? ?? Friends & ?? Leaders. JSA alums of that era became lawyers, business leaders, political leaders, social justice activists, and even rabbis. Several married each other. People like Israel "Izzy" Klein, Cindy Chen, Rachel Derkits-Gelman, and Abby Gordon still influence how I think about friendship, politics, and even parenting today. JSA's moment may have passed. No doubt other groups will fill these roles for the post-COVID high school generation. But it will be missed.

This is truly heartbreaking news, given that American democracy is in dire need of organizations like the Junior State of America (JSA). JSA not only gave me a transformative sense of purpose and community but also taught me about true statesmanship and the pillars of a healthy democracy— that is, civil and free discourse, civic engagement and representation that is inclusive of all swaths of society, and civic education for future generations of leaders, both in the US and abroad. From attending the 2012 Moctezuma Leadership Summit and the summer programs at Stanford (2011), Princeton (2012), Davis (2012), and Georgetown (2013) to serving as NorCal JSA's Expansion Director and Chapter President of American Indian Public High School's JSA chapter (among other roles), I was heavily involved in JSA. And, naturally, JSA had a significant impact on the trajectory of my own life. It was at a JSA year-round conference that I learned about the existence of my alma mater, Claremont McKenna College, and was encouraged to apply. It was through JSA that I developed my passion for public service and intercultural exchange, leading me to intern for Congresswoman Barbara Lee and become a Top 2 Finalist for Oakland's Public Ethics Commission last December. And, just as important, it was at these countless JSA programs and conferences that I gained cherished memories and forged invaluable friendships (some of whom I still stay in touch with today). It is my hope that the JSA Governors' efforts to reinvent the organization succeed. As the U.S.A. marches forward in the face of polarization, I pray that this vacuum in youth civic education is filled by the leadership and example of those of us who benefitted immensely from programs like JSA. #JSA #bethepeople #statesmenship #democracy #youth #civicengagement #juniorstateofamerica

In fact, it was in autumn?1954 that the French intellectual Alexandre Marc founded CIFE, together with other activists of the Union of European Federalists (UEF).?It was a critical moment of European integration, because the year 1954 saw the failure of the European Defence Community (EDC).?For Marc and other European federalists, a new approach had to be taken to pursue the goal of a unified Europe: educating European citizens to make them espouse this ideal and further it in their professional lives. With this objective in mind, CIFE was founded. ???? 70 years later, we live in a very different Europe. CIFE has changed too – it has evolved into a European institute of higher education receiving more than 150 graduate students each year, a growth we can be proud of. As we celebrate the achievements and forward momentum within our communities, it's crucial to acknowledge the role of diversity as a source of strength and beauty, echoing the profound words of Maya Angelou, "In diversity there is beauty and there is strength." This principle guides our efforts and aspirations, particularly in bridging the technological gaps experienced by minority communities. In this light, the collaboration between QED-C and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) stands as a beacon of progress, aiming to ensure that opportunities in Quantum Information Science and Technology (QIST) are accessible and inclusive. Supporting HBCUs and STEM programs is more than an investment in education; it's an investment in a future where diversity fuels innovation and advancement. I'm grateful to Damian Watkins, D. Eng., Aperio Global's Chief of Research and Innovation, for his pivotal role in the recent publication on QIST programs at HBCUs. As an alumnus of Morgan State, Damian is a staunch advocate for enhancing access to technology and education, aiming to narrow the technological gap. Just like our friends at Burnley FC, we were relegated (again) from the premier-league level of international educators that is known as the NAFSA Annual Conference. By relegation, I mean that we were priced out of participating in this annual gathering of professionals. We and others like us simply cannot afford the astronomical $1,200 registration fee (per person). Nor can we justify it. But this is fine, we are ok with touring the "lower-tier circuit" of conferences nationally at a fraction of the cost of the NAFSA conference. But at some point, we in the field must consider creating an alternative international education conference that is open and inviting to ALL professionals and organizations, not just those with deep pockets. #globalthoughts #intled #intleducation #internationaleducation #studyabroad #educationabroad #conferences #relegation

To accept and appreciate the wrong pronunciation / accent for the Spoken English Learners from the beginning is the right and the most effective method to teach and learn English to speak rapidly and fluently! Because the accent or right pronunciation issue of teaching or training culture in language learning is in fact the prime cause to create shyness, fear and disappointment among the learners and ultimately destroy their desire and dream to learn speak English and it also true for the learners of any other foreign languages are taught through English! Whereas the more languages a person will learn, the more that person could beyond the border without barrier! Again the more languages a person if be learnt;?the more knowledge, wisdom, informative, competent?and sensible / smart?Leader would that person be! ?

Continuing Education (CE) units play a key roll in helping universities respond to the rapidly evolving educational and lifelong learning needs of the 21st century. Follow CAUCE to keep up with the latest information, trends and innovations.

Recruiting students doesn't require a huge budget. With the right strategy, you can recruit students with time and no money. ? As a consultant who works with graduate programs wanting to increase their enrollment and diversity, I often advise people on the importance of hosting more information sessions to improve their touchpoints and visibility with aspiring students. ? An excellent example of effective promotion is Ashley Tull and Texas Christian University's approach to promoting their Higher Ed Leadership Ed.D. program with simplicity. Here are the four major points the flyer conveys to aspiring students that you should also consider: ? 1. Hold one session per month, providing options for students to learn about your program, especially those who aren't local. 2. Host a 1-hour event - keeping the event concise and informative. 3. Clearly state the purpose of the event and what attendees will learn from it. 4. Highlight what the program offers, such as flexible classes, GRE optional, and suitability for working or adult learners. ? Here are four quick and easy changes I would recommend: ? 1. Instead of email, provide a short URL to a registration link that asks a few questions about the attendees' background and interests in an Ed.D. 2. Include a value proposition statement that outlines what the program offers to help attendees professionally and why the investment would be worthwhile. 3. Clearly specify the time zone, as not everyone may be aware that TCU is located in Texas, in the Central Standard Time Zone. 4. Include an image showing faculty and students interacting to add visual appeal to the flyer. ? I love helping programs create low-cost, effective recruitment strategies to attract talented individuals who can succeed in their programs. ?
