~6 months before landing a role at Duolingo, I asked Amy Lima to document her job hunt process to create a playbook that others could follow. Here's what stood out ?? 1?? Amy prepared before any signals It doesn’t need to be some massive website/case study overhaul. She just chipped away at a deck showcasing her recent work that she could easily pass along to someone in a DM. That allowed her to act quickly once she received the news ?? 2?? She CRUSHED her announcement post Posting a flippant “just found out I’ve been laid off ??” message on social media is a wasted opportunity. This is your smoke signal and you only get one chance to nail it. Amy’s post didn't go viral by accident. It's all because she made the genius move to list out specific ways that people could help: ? comment for reach ? write Linkedin recommendations ? share advice ? share job postings ? etc. 3?? She took notes obsessively after every conversation and organized them in a giant database broken down by company and interview stage. She then answered them in writing immediately after the call while the material was still fresh. ? What did I not expect to get asked? ? Where did I get tripped up? ? How could I have improved this answer? ? What did I forget to say? ? Where did people ask clarifying questions? ? etc. 4?? She asked for feedback at the end of each conversation: “How did this go? Was there anything you felt was missing or off?” Not only is this a great source of learning but it’s also an opportunity to fill any gaps via email. But that's just the start... A measured job application strategy is best. Three to four applications a day is a good number. Spend more time creating informative, balanced, quality applications, and you will see better results.

With how difficult it is to get your first role in software right now, should you be looking at trying to start your own thing? I won't say that's a bad idea, but here's what my experience has been like. 2016: Tried to start my own Coder for Hire type company and never secured a single client. 2017: Tried getting on Thumbtack and Upwork and never secured a single client. I view contract apps like this as "a race to the bottom". You're competing against a global market of devs so many of them are willing to work for a lot less than I am. Also, there are dozens of bids for even the worst projects making it difficult to even get into a conversation with the job poster. 2020: tried building my own software which would monetize via a monthly subscription. Never got a paying user (other than my mom and an ex-coworker who wanted to support me). 2021: my wife connected me with a guy looking for coding help. I worked for him on an hourly basis in my spare time as a side gig and made $5-10k over the course of a year. 2023: tried starting a software apprenticeship program in my spare time. Didn't want to put as much work into it as I could see was going to be necessary and closed it up. Bottom line, I'm all about trying to work for yourself but it's really hard. Customer acquisition is the part that's really hard, not the technology side. If a client falls into your lap, jump on it. #software #juniordeveloper

And it’s only the end of January! ?? The learning curve was INSANE! ?? From crafting concise and engaging content to feeling comfortable on camera, then diving into editing – adding effects, captions, and finally posting – it was hands-on learning at its finest. All of this while juggling 5 different professional projects (plus personal ones). It was hectic but fun! And totally worth it! ?? Here’s what each video covers: ?? One of the things I always got wrong was that I thought work had to be hard. ? If it’s easy, it’s cheating. ? Thanks to working with the wonderful?Elisabeth Müller, who’s taught me a thing or two about our inner drivers we adapt from childhood, I’m now doing the opposite. ?? Quick recap: I worked under the most obnoxious boss in my student days. I’m talking incredibly obnoxious. Because my first Bachelor’s *felt* too easy and only took me 5 semesters, I paid for a second Bachelor’s at a private university in Business, Law and some other shizz I didn’t care about. Oh, yes, Economics. Because working 3 jobs wasn’t hard enough, I took out a night job at a law firm as a secretary for foreign languages. And because doing a standard Master’s in the usual time wasn’t hard enough, I uprooted everything and finished it in México. And because *fluffy* things like transcreation and copy didn’t really count since they came too easily, I opted for technical, financial and legal translation. Ahhhh. Like sliding into a warm bath. Filled with piranhas. And because having 2 companies and 2 children didn’t feel challenging enough, I took on a 40-hour sales role. Sleeping is for losers, after all. (<— not actual life advice.) Yes, I have a hard time switching off. But why would I want to? ?? I LOVE LOVE LOVE what I do. Truly.? Even when I’m not working, my head’s plotting new business ideas. When I go on holiday, I see opportunities for the hotel to tell better stories. Coming out of my second call with Lingo Tribe today, a platform?Daniel Caiger and I are building for linguists so they can get better at inbound marketing, creating sticky content and getting more volume… .. It felt effortless. And it’s a good, warm feeling. Is this ? cheating? ? I’ve combined what I love with what is needed and what I can monetise. The rest would be a waste of everyone’s time, right? Transitioning into marketing and recruiting allowed me to step into a role where I can take control of my day, manage my schedule, and tap into my creativity—all from the comfort of my own home. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: don’t be afraid to take bold steps and embrace change, even if it feels daunting. ?? Proud Moment Alert ?? Today, I’m giving myself permission to say it out loud: I’m proud of myself! Since September, I’ve been on a journey to find the right job. My main criteria? It had to be remote. Beyond that, I was open to various opportunities. But navigating the job market wasn’t easy. I questioned everything—my CV, approach, motivation, timing, network, and skills. It felt like I was stuck in an endless cycle of rejection, despite giving my best. Then I had a realization: I love to work, to learn, and to grow. So why wait for the “perfect” opportunity when I can create one for myself? In December, I decided to take control and start a new chapter as a freelancer. I learned how to build websites (turns out, I love being creative and I’m pretty good at it too!) and even landed my first client. At the same time, I started teaching Swedish and Danish online—and I’m rocking that as well! No, it’s not the dream salary (yet), but I’m using this time to gain valuable skills, explore new paths, and enjoy the process. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: success isn’t always about landing the “perfect” job—it’s about embracing growth, taking risks, and creating opportunities when doors don’t open.
