Duolingo took my parents!! Well not really but they did take little Timmy’s parents away in this hilarious ad. A few years ago when the meme sprung up of Duolingo always spying on you and taking drastic steps to ensure you never miss another lesson again no one expected the company to fully embrace it and make an ad out of it. I’ve known about Duolingo for a while and even used it to learn Japanese. But recently, my sister (Pratyusha Prattipati) hit a 500-day streak on the app, and that really got me thinking: What makes people love this app so much? Out of curiosity, I decided to dive deeper and do a product teardown. Here’s a quick summary of what stood out to me: What’s working well: ?? Gamified learning keeps things fun and engaging. ?? No doubt they use the first three but it's the final one that is most prevalent - how are you rewarding behaviour? Not wanting to lose your Duolingo streak has taken Gen Z and Millennials by storm. My TikTok is full of people on nights out, at birthdays, even on their wedding day.. getting their language lesson in to avoid losing their streak ?? We just released our Q1 earnings at Duolingo, and 2024 is off to a strong start! A few highlights: ? Daily Active Users (DAUs) increased 54% YoY; ? Total bookings grew 41% and revenue grew 45% YoY; ? We delivered our highest quarterly Adjusted EBITDA of $44.0 million. Because of this performance, we’ve raised our full year guidance. Thank you, Duolingo, for the reminder—I feel so triggered! ?? 20 years ago, I enrolled in a Mandarin class for 3 years. By the end, I could confidently communicate in basic Mandarin. But as I entered secondary school, I chose Arabic language for my PMR. So, I no longer had anyone to practice Mandarin with, especially since my classmates were mostly Malays and non-Mandarin speakers. Fast forward to Form 4 and Form 5, I finally found myself in a Chinese circle as I took pure science stream—but to my surprise, they all preferred speaking in English. Later, during my Diploma and Degree at UiTM, opportunities to use Mandarin were obviously non-existent. And so, my Mandarin skills were left to wither for over two decades. Guess, it wasn't my luck eh ?? Now, life has come full circle. I’m working for a company that serves global markets and is based in Hong Kong, with nearly 95% of the staff in our Malaysian office being Chinese. Obviously, being FOMO as usual, I feel the urge to re-learn and refine my Mandarin skills as some meetings are conducted in Mandarin, which now I have to use AI notetaker to translate. It feels like the perfect time to reclaim what was once mine (LOL) and it's never too late to start. I have started learning Mandarin on Duolingo (although I actually paused one year ago, sorry Duolingo ??). I'm watching a fascinating presentation by Gina Gotthilf about growth topics (a link is in the 1st comment). Did you know, that Duolingo tested "the number of tears that Duo cries and the size of the puddle when you fail"? ?? ??On the one side, that impressed me a lot. I understand, that there might be some psychological aspects to why they tested that. ??On the other side, I was shocked at how far that was from an educational standpoint. I'm still curious whether they had a choice to find & use other leverages to grow fast. #duolingo #growth
