ERGs are powerful tools for fostering inclusion, but a poorly planned event can easily backfire. In a recent episode of Intent to Impact, DEI expert, Courtney Humphrey, discussed how important language and understanding cultural differences are when planning employee resource group (ERG) events, particularly for global programs. Even little things can make a big difference in making everyone feel welcome. Here are 3 key takeaways: ??/ ???????????????????? ???? ???????????????? ?????? ???????????????? ??????????????????: → Understand the significance of language and cultural awareness in planning events for ERGs ??/ ?????? ?????????? ???? ?? ????????: → A catchy title is fun, but it should also be descriptive to encourage everyone’s participation. ??/ ???????????? ?????????? ????????????: → Think about the different backgrounds of your ERG members and use language that everyone can understand. ?????????? ????????: ? Do Your Research: ? Learn about the cultural backgrounds of your members and avoid potentially sensitive topics or phrases ? Get Feedback: ? Ask your ERG members for their input on event names, themes, and topics of discussion. ? Be Open to Learning: ? If you make a mistake, acknowledge it and learn from it. Be mindful of language and cultural differences, and you will craft ERG events that are genuinely inclusive and engaging for all. Humphrey's advice on language and cultural awareness really resonated with me. Which of these tips do you find most challenging to implement in your ERG planning? Drop a comment below ?? I know intimately what it feels like to fight for your voice to be heard. When I first started establishing DEI trainings, I walked into rooms full of people who saw me as nothing more than a diversity hire—a box checked to satisfy a quota. No matter how much expertise I brought to the table, how intentional my work was, or how deeply my identity and lived experience protested that prejudicial mindset, I could feel the weight of their doubt. But here’s the thing: marginalized voices have always had to shout to be heard. And when we finally break through, we don’t just create space for ourselves—we open the door for others to step through, too. That’s why my work is focused on centering those voices, ensuring that no one else has to fight as hard to be seen, respected, and valued as I did, as I do, as my sisters and brothers do every day. True inclusion doesn’t come from performative gestures or tokenization. It happens when organizations amplify the voices that have historically been ignored, when they take the time to understand and dismantle the biases that hold them back. If your team is ready to do the work, let’s connect. Together, we can build a culture where every voice is not just heard but celebrated. https://lnkd.in/gb3fFhGH

October is Global Diversity Awareness Month, a time to recognize and appreciate the cultures, traditions, and perspectives that make up our world! As a global company, it’s important that we embrace the diverse backgrounds of our people so we can take more meaningful steps toward building a more inclusive, innovative, and successful company. Last month, our Learning & Development team spotlighted how to embrace a global mindset and shared many resources with our employees. Here are a few of the things we learned and ways we can embrace a global mindset: 1. Gain self-awareness. Become aware of your own culture and biases. You might only realize you carry biases once you examine your perspectives. 2. Be curious. To quote a line from Ted Lasso: “Be curious, not judgmental.” If you don’t understand something, instead of judging, ask questions. When we ask questions, it opens our minds to new perspectives. 3. Be flexible and open-minded. If a colleague in Europe does something different, be open to the new way of working. Neither way is wrong; it’s just different. 4. Practice. Take every opportunity to learn something new about someone, whether it’s speaking their language, learning about their culture, or trying their food. The more you practice and learn, the more your mindset will grow. Learn more about Global Diversity Awareness Month by checking out The Diversity Movement: https://lnkd.in/gmAatBUk

This week, I’ve seen a range of amazing events, talks, and sessions that truly light up my soul. It’s inspiring to witness such important conversations around diversity and rewriting the narrative. It got me thinking… Isn’t it more important to create spaces where we have respectful and inclusive conversations, rather than just relying on a glossary of terms? Yes, language matters, but it evolves—just like the preferences of individuals and communities. Our focus should be on fostering empathy, respect, and open-mindedness, so we can navigate these conversations authentically. When we embed the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) into our everyday lives, we create space for more meaningful connections. Relying solely on “approved” terms can reduce these important discussions to a checklist, missing the deeper goal of fostering understanding and belonging. Let’s educate, but also focus on thoughtful, respectful communication—because empathy, both for the present and our history, is key to truly understanding EDI. ?? What are your thoughts on how we can continue to rewrite the narrative around diversity and inclusion in a way that creates lasting impact?

October is Global Diversity Awareness Month – a time where I’m reminded of the power that lies in our differences. It’s about recognizing that each of us brings a unique set of experiences, ideas, and perspectives to the table, and that’s what drives real progress. When I think about some of the most successful moments in my career, they’ve often been when I’ve worked alongside people who challenged my way of thinking – who opened my eyes to new approaches and solutions – sometimes to problems I didn’t see before. It’s a reminder to be a better ally and advocate for belonging. Whether it’s actively listening to someone’s story, trying a diverse cuisine, learning a few words in a new language, or stepping out of our comfort zones, we’re all playing a part in making inclusion a reality. For me, Global Diversity Awareness Month is an opportunity to renew my commitment to fostering an environment where everyone feels valued, and to challenge myself to do more. As we navigate this month, I invite you to join me in celebrating what makes each of us unique, and reflecting on how we can all contribute to a more inclusive workplace — and world. Here’s to building a brighter, more inclusive future for everyone.
