Mick Jagger, who recently turned 81, still shimmies and lopes across the stage at concerts. There are a lot more Jaggers out there than you may think. In their book “Roctogenarians: Late in Life Comebacks, Debuts, and Triumphs,” authors Mo Rocca and Jonathan Greenberg profile dozens of people from all walks of life who rejected the idea that your older years are a time for clocking out. These are people who see their 60s, 70s, 80s and even 90s as a time of possibility. Older people often find themselves free from the expectations of others, since they care a lot less about what other people think of them than young people do, Rocca and Greenberg say. So they can be emboldened to take on new challenges, discover new talents and return to long-abandoned dreams. Rocca and Greenberg call these late-in-life successes Roctogenarians. Here’s what many of Roctogenarians have in common.

50 years from now, Michael Jordan will be seen as greater than LeBron James for the same reason that Led Zeppelin will be seen as greater than Metallica. Reasonable people can differ on this today, mostly because of longevity, counting stats, and the boat-rising tides of historical progress of sports and music (optimization of business model, approach to personal health, etc.) The graph here shows MJ vs. LeBron seasons stack-ranked by win shares, from highest to lowest. LeBron has clearly had the best late career of any NBA player. But, from the “who was better at generating wins” perspective, Jordan’s best 11 years were better than LeBron’s, and this feels significantly more important. Music is obviously more subjective, but there are certainly a couple Y axis metrics that show the same relationship if you sub?album / ticket sales, number of bands influenced, all the lifestyle things you’d suspect if you read ‘Hammer of the Gods,’ etc. Beyond comparing the prime years, though, here’s the trump card: Led Zeppelin and Michael Jordan created, dominated, transcended and, ultimately, defined what it meant to be superstars of their category. No one ever asks who is the next generation’s Van Halen or Kobe or Pearl Jam or Tracy McGrady. I’m sure you got there already, but this isn’t really a post about sports or music.?

I have such a wide taste in music. Like seriously, if we've never talked music, we should. This live performance by Black Sabbath from 1970 is so amazing. Thanks to Greg Dohler for bringing it up in conversation over lunch today. Greg's a great photographer and friend, and it was great to commiserate about this awesome performance. What does this have to do with business? Black Sabbath was panned by the critics of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Rolling Stone said they were "Like Cream! But worse." But watch this film, and you'll see that from a performance point of view, they're amazing. They were operating on a different level and totally misunderstood by the prevailing opinions. Isn't that our dream as business owners? To press beyond, to be on the cutting edge of our industry? To innovate and grow? Final thought: if my dream as a business owner had a soundtrack, I'd definitely want Bill Ward playing the drums. Good gravy!

It was a really good OMG Q3 Technical Committee Meeting in Chicago this week! Having been here for the first time, I feel like I have a few observations to share: 1) OMG publishes its standards #free of charge, rather than trying to make a bargain out of a necessity 2) OMG has always done what some standardization organizations are still trying to do: publishing all standards intrinsically #ModelBased and #DigitalCentric. 3) OMG leaders show a vital interest in new approaches while having an extraordinarily deep and clear understanding of what already exists and how it all dovetails. 4) OMG boards and committees worked like a clockwork, making a multitude of decisions and approvals at impressive pace. Living in a digital world, this organization truly deserves our #trust, #contribution and #support when it comes to international data standards! I am confident that our #CASCaDE initiative originating from prostep ivip Association's #DDP and Gesellschaft für Systems Engineering e.V.'s #SpecIF is in the best hands possible, and we will make it a success together.
