In the mean time, if you are looking for a quick fix as a Recruiter or Hiring Manager, you can actually start today by asking different questions in your applications and interviews. ??If you get a veteran applicant and don't understand why they are transitioning from military HR to civilian IT, ask them "Were you selected for your military role or did you choose it?" Not everyone has a choice over which military job they get. ??If you don't see the correlation between 2629 - Signals Intelligence / Electromagnetic Warfare Technician on their resume and what you need for your Network Technician role, ask them "What transferrable skills did you gain in the military for this role?" ??If you think it's weird that they have led hundreds of employees and been responsible for millions of dollars in equipment but are learning how to code and applying for an associate level role, ask them "What are you looking for in your next career?" Did you know it's National Hire a Veteran Day? That's my kiddo when he was four, representing military families. :) I am incredibly lucky in that I have an amazing support network that helped my find my place in life 2.0. I'm so glad I also had resources like Centurion Military Alliance (CMA) to help me figure out what I wanted to do in my second career and how to talk to all the reasons why hiring a vet (ME!) is a good idea. Double lucky that I found a home at Spectrum where I am valued and appreciated for myself, my service, and my contributions. They really understand the value we bring, and want more of us to join their team! With that, here's my own top 10 list of why you should hire a vet! 1. We learn quick. Every assignment is different, and every team is different. We're used to just figuring it out... and we do! 2. We know how to come to work every day on time and work while we are there. Reliability is something we do. 3. We do teamwork. We use "we" a lot for a reason. It's because we understand that it takes a team to get things done. 4. Leadership is a skill we are expected to develop early on, and we have lots of opportunity to practice it. We also know how to mentor and teach others to lead! 5. We've done a lot! See item #1. That gives us unique experiences and a broad perspective. 6. We are flexible and resilient. We understand how to shift priorities as needed and become what's needed to perform in a role. 7. Crisis management. We are familiar with and often comfortable in high pressure and high stakes situations. When people at work panic, our perspective often provides us a level of calm. 8. Accountability. We take personal responsibility for our work, our teams, and our actions. 9. We know how to accomplish a goal and to get the "mission" done. Recruiters, do you specialize? I hope the answer is yes. I specialize in Aerospace/Defense Industry when those companies manufacture or build something. That is my niche, my sweet spot, my specialty. Do I deviate, yes but that is highly dependent on the situation. I spoke to a potential client today and this director said, they have such difficulty using agency recruiters because they do not have experience recruiting for their aerospace specialty. If I did not specialize, then I would not be able to differentiate myself from other agencies. You see, I've started and either sold or merged two aerospace/defense companies and that was before I started a recruiting agency, The Patriot Group, Inc. (TPGI) back in 20212.
