"Welcome to Lake View Towers —Where the Only View is Another Tower" Had to laugh today. Driving through our city's newest "luxury" development—Green Paradise Heights. The irony? They razed a 100-year-old banyan tree to put up that sign. It's fascinating how we've mastered the art of selling nature while destroying it: "Forest County" (concrete jungle with plastic plants) "Garden View Apartments" (overlooking a parking lot) "Lake Vista Homes" (where the lake was filled to build homes) "Eco-Living Spaces" (with three levels of basement parking) The marketing brochures show birds, butterflies, and green canopies. The reality? Security guards shooing away peacocks because they're "damaging" the artificial lawn. But here's the deeper truth: We're not just selling apartments. We're selling guilt. We're packaging remorse. We're marketing memories of what we destroyed, wrapped in glossy brochures and EMI schemes. The duality is striking: We name places after nature we've displaced We pay premium for "green views" while opposing actual green initiatives We want our kids to learn about nature... through iPad apps We applaud environmental speeches in air-conditioned auditoriums Perhaps these names are not just marketing tools. They're monuments to our collective cognitive dissonance. Tombstones for the nature we replaced, dressed up in celebratory fonts. The next time you see a "River View Complex" in middle of a concrete desert, remember: We're not just losing green spaces. We're losing the honesty to admit it. Question is: How long will we keep framing absence as presence? Homeowners and cities alike can create "thermal oases" with trees, greenery, and water features like ponds and fountains. ???? Urban heat islands have Aussies looking for shade! Many cities are planning ahead with ambitious tree canopy targets, while smarter landscaping choices and lighter-colored materials are lowering temperatures in hot spots ???. By embracing strategic, small-space greening and collaborating with nurseries to grow climate-resilient trees, we're all helping cities feel a little less like ovens! Can you believe transforming a wall like this costs less than installing one traffic light? Cities can spend around €300,000 to install one traffic light — depending on location and complexity. But a 250 m2 vertical garden can cost half of that! Here’s the crazy part - it costs about the same to maintain one traffic light for a year as it does to maintain a 250 m2 vertical garden. Our cities invest heavily in managing traffic but almost nothing in bringing nature back into urban spaces. Imagine if we had as many green walls as traffic lights. In Paris, this old, grey, lifeless concrete wall was transformed into a beautiful vertical garden—for half the cost of a single traffic light. This 250 m2 green wall, with 7,600 plants from 240 species, does so much more than look beautiful: ? It creates a home for birds and insects. ? It cleans the air, improving the environment for everyone. ? It cools the building and surrounding streets, reducing the urban heat. ? It helps block noise, making the city quieter and more peaceful. This project, designed by Patrick Blanc, proves that even the most forgotten spaces can be turned into something alive and thriving. Urbanism: A Conservationist's Perspective I often find myself balancing two seemingly contradictory passions: developing real estate and conserving nature. As a developer, I thrive on the challenge of creating functional, beautiful spaces that people can live and work in. Yet, as a conservationist, I deeply appreciate the solitude and beauty of the untouched wilderness, a love that drew me to Colorado's vast wild and public lands. The Earth boasts approximately 36.8 billion acres of land. However, not all of this is suitable for human habitation. About 33% of the Earth's land is desert, and another 24% is mountainous terrain. This leaves us with roughly 15.9 billion acres of habitable land. Given the current global population of approximately 7.951 billion people, this equates to about 2 acres per person if distributed evenly. In considering the type of world we want to live in, a scenario where every individual is limited to a small parcel of land is far from ideal. Instead, I believe our efforts should be concentrated on developing and enhancing urban areas. By focusing development within cities, we can preserve the remaining greenfield spaces—those precious untouched areas that offer refuge for wildlife and a respite for us. Urban development has numerous benefits, including driving economic growth by attracting businesses, investors, and talent. Well-planned urban areas can stimulate local economies, create jobs, and foster innovation. This growth not only benefits the construction and development sectors but also improves the quality of life for residents through increased economic opportunities. Moreover, focusing on development in urban areas allows for more efficient use of land. By building vertically and utilizing mixed-use developments, we can accommodate growing populations without further encroaching on natural landscapes. This approach not only preserves our green spaces but also creates vibrant, sustainable communities. We have a responsibility to consider the long-term impacts of our projects. By prioritizing urban development and conserving undeveloped land, we can create a future where both human communities and natural ecosystems thrive. In the UK, this will bring relief from the hotter, drier summers and warmer, wetter winters, and protection from the extreme weather events we can expect. Alongside more natural landscaping in streets and public spaces, buildings can contribute through green roofs, living walls, and planted courtyards and gardens. In the Netherlands, Aeres Hogeschool Almere by @bdgarchitecten sets a good example, with its living walls, green roof and lushly landscaped setting.
