It's crazy to think about: until 2016, rum was more popular than tequila, mezcal, and even American whiskey (bourbon, etc.) in the US. It was the go-to drink for many. But then, something shifted. While other categories embraced innovation and introduced exciting, lifestyle-driven brands like 818, Casamigos, Cincoro, and countless others, the rum category remained largely stagnant. These new brands brought storytelling, celebrity endorsements, and a fresh, aspirational appeal that resonated with a new generation of drinkers. I visit dozens of liquor stores every month, and when I walk by the rum aisle, it's always the same story. The shelves are filled with the same legacy brands that have been around for decades, offering little to capture the attention of today's consumers. The rum category is ripe for disruption. There's an opportunity to inject new energy into this beloved spirit with the contemporary cool factor that resonates with today’s drinkers. Now, there are a few brands that are doing great work here. I personally love both the liquid and branding of (alphabetically): 1. Candela Mamajuana (obviously) 2. Coconut Cartel 3. Eminente 4. La Hechicera - Fine Aged Rum from Colombia 5. Licorera Cihuatán 6. Ron Colon Salvadore?o 7. SelvaRey Rum As you can see, there is still way more room to grow! Did I miss any cool brands? ???? #rum #spirits #cpg Source: Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, Latinometrics
Wondering how whether these trends can be translated to their non-alcoholic counterparts?!
Wow...but I certainly understand why
As a person who loves whiskey and Mezcal, this is not surprising. Although I continue to love my rum and cokes:)
valuable information, thanks for sharing.
Great share and super interesting. Rum is a strange one, in that it wears multiple hats but doesn't feel like it has one defining serve or need state it plays into. Whereas Tequila has been a simple category entry for a lot of consumers, shots or Margaritas. Keen to get your thoughts on how Rum can overcome this identity crisis and what serve strategy you think can reinvigorate the category?
Very insightful! But we think you missed us ??
I do enjoy Papa's Pilar and live in Colorado. I did discover it while down in Key West.
Couldn't agree more Alejandro!
What about The Duppy Share - my favourite rum!
