Moral injury is the emotional pain and functional impairment people can experience after participating in, failing to prevent, or witnessing highly stressful events that transgress their beliefs about right and wrong. In recent years, there has been an explosion of interest in moral injury and its impacts. In this new Trauma Blog, Sonya Norman, Shira Maguen and Brandon Griffin discuss the Moral Injury and Distress Scale (MIDS) and how this scale can be used to identify those with clinically meaningful and impairing moral injury. How will having a method to identify clinically meaningful and impairing moral injury help move the field of moral injury forward? How can the MIDS cut score be used in clinical practice and/or research? What are the potential advantages and disadvantages of adding moral injury to the diagnostic classification systems typically used by mental health professionals (e.g., Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-5-Text Revision)? Read the answer to these questions now in the ISTSS Trauma Blog at: https://lnkd.in/dT_6Rhwn Or check the original paper in the Journal of Traumatic Stress: https://lnkd.in/dAgS5AYY

Connecting DEI With Trauma Informed Care Connecting DEI with Trauma Informed Care is critical. In today's society, many people suffer from stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. Unfortunately, some of these issues stem from race-based, gender-based, and intergenerational trauma. The effects of racism, bias, and discrimination can negatively impact individuals' mental health on both a subconscious and conscious level.? ? By integrating the principles of DEI with Trauma-informed Care, we can better understand the deeper layers of a person's personality and comprehend how "lived experience" relates to and fuels various forms of trauma.? ? It is crucial to address the pushback against education and discussions about current-day racism and homophobia, as well as learning about the disturbing aspects of American history. This pushback only serves to increase levels of trauma and can intensify feelings of anxiety and depression.? ? The healthcare and social service field, along with other sectors, must increase community awareness and address these concerns to reverse the unsettling trends. Only then can people from diverse backgrounds live quality lives where they are respected and valued. #traumarecovery #traumainformed

The recent trend that was/ is circulating regarding "POV: your card declines at therapy so they bring out _____" is perceived as humorous, yet it increases misconceptions about therapy costs and therapist behavior. It's crucial to recognize that therapy fees vary widely and many therapists offer sliding scale fees to make services accessible. Misinformation spread through social media trends can influence perceptions, especially among younger generations who rely heavily on these platforms for information. It's concerning that most of today's youth may trust social media over conducting thorough research. It's essential to emphasize that therapists are committed to helping individuals navigate mental health challenges and prioritize their well-being above financial concerns. Encouraging accurate portrayals of therapy fosters a better understanding of its accessibility and the genuine intentions of mental health professionals. They do not judge you when your card might get declined .

Children – and their brains – adapt to survive. When a child grows up in an environment where there is abuse and neglect, their brains will be shaped by those experiences. These brain changes may not lead to an immediate mental health problem. Rather, they may help the child survive in that adverse environment. However, these same changes may make a child more vulnerable to developing mental health problems in future everyday environments. In part, this is because the brain changes can affect a child’s ability – and opportunities – to cultivate and maintain social relationships with others. As I embark on the second edition of my Trauma-Informed Therapy Program, I remain dedicated to maintaining authenticity and real-world applicability while structuring the program. Here is how I ensure this: ??Beyond Theories: We go beyond merely tapping into trauma theories. We explore the broader environmental and sociopolitical contexts that shape trauma experiences. ??Understanding Manifestations of Trauma: Instead of viewing trauma manifestations as merely problematic, we strive to understand how even the most “distressing” behaviors are protective mechanisms to prevent further harm. ??Holistic Perspective: By addressing these key questions, we bring a deeper sense of authenticity and relevance to the program, ensuring it’s not just a theoretical marathon but a comprehensive exploration. ??My goal is to equip mental health professionals with the nuanced perspectives needed to understand and address trauma holistically. I sincerely hope this batch reflects my efforts to bring in more perspective and does justice to the complex realities of trauma. ??Because at the end of the day, being “trauma-informed” is not just an adjective, it is an approach, perspective, and a sense of assurance for your client that you would truly get them. #TraumaInformedCare #MentalHealth #Therapy #ProfessionalDevelopment #AuthenticityInTherapy
