Seal Flushing Plan 11. Description Seal flush from pump discharge through orifice for single seal. Objectives. 1. Seal chamber heat removal. 2. Seal chamber venting on horizontal pumps. 3. Increase seal chamber pressure and fluid vapor margin. Applications 1. General applications with clean fluids. 2. Clean, non-polymerizing fluids. Preventative Maintenance 1. Use an orifice with a minimum 3 mm (1/8 inch) diameter for adequate seal chamber flow. 2. Increase boiling point margin with proper orifice and throat bushing sizing. 3. Flush should be directed over seal faces with piping at 12 O’clock position. 4. Typical failure mode is a clogged orifice - check temperatures at pipe ends.

Recently, our team addressed a leakage issue in a piping system caused by a failing gasket and loose coupling bolts. Here’s how we resolved it and the lessons learned: ?? The Problem: Gasket Failure: The gasket had degraded over time due to temperature fluctuations and pressure variations, leading to leaks. Coupling Bolt Issues: Loose bolts caused misalignment, reducing the seal integrity between flanges. ??? Our Approach: 1?? Identifying the Root Cause: Inspected the gasket material and found it was not ideal for the operating conditions. Checked torque on coupling bolts and discovered uneven tightening. 2?? Replacement and Repairs: Installed a new gasket made from a material suited for the system’s pressure and temperature requirements. Replaced worn bolts and ensured proper alignment of the pipe flanges. Applied the correct torque using calibrated tools to evenly distribute pressure on the gasket. 3?? Testing and Validation: Conducted a pressure test to verify that the seal was restored and there were no residual leaks. ?? Its primary function is to ensure a secure, leak-proof connection that allows fluids or gases to flow through the piping system. Pipe joints also accommodate various mechanical stresses such as thermal expansion, contraction, and vibration, which can affect the integrity of the system.

One approach to minimize #Surges (#WaterHammer) in liquid systems is to lower the maximum velocities in the piping system which means low frictional loss or lower dynamic head requirement for the pumps. Its drawback is higher capital cost due to larger pipe sizes or equipments but on the other hand, the power consumption by the pumps will be reduced (lower operational cost).
