Strengths Based Approach I researched inclusion & teach using a strengths based approach. Often I say to students, “Don’t worry about what you can’t do, do what you can.” My timely feedback is positive and encouraging. It is a big reason why I see huge gains in students: #academically, #emotionally, #socially. ??? #inclusion #education https://lnkd.in/g9kpuYMN

Typically, headteachers who come to us are dedicated to fostering inclusion and diversity awareness in their setting but they face challenges in achieving these to the level they aspire to. There are many different theories as to why inclusion and diversity initiatives fail to gain traction in schools: ??Overwhelming focus on academic achievement ??Resistance to change ??Inconsistent implementation Whilst these can in fact be hurdles, a setting doesn’t need to sacrifice focus on academic achievement or worry about additional implementation responsibilities to integrate and benefit from the value of inclusive education. Imagine if you discovered a proven method to significantly enhance reading engagement, inclusion and diversity awareness in your school. Would you hesitate to implement it, or would you act immediately? I thought so ?? You get to prioritize all of what’s important whilst sidestepping resistance to change and garnering engagement in the vision. Children are a discerning bunch. The moment they recognize that they are being represented in the literature used in school topics and across the curriculum, their sense of belonging improves and they will be much more on board. The good news is that, shifts like these can happen quickly when you have the resources to weave diversity and inclusion into your school values, topics/curriculum and pedagogy as a whole. Consider: ? Mrs D, headteacher at a SEND?base who went from experiencing sporadic reading levels to significant increases in reading engagement and attainment. ? Or Mr M, who saw marked shifts in parental engagement in literacy initiatives. Want results like these? Happier Every Chapter helps you champion and advance diversity and inclusion goals in your setting with literature that is not only representative but curated to align to and enrich wider learning. ?? If there is one thing I have learned while working in education, it is the criticality of recognising, valuing and accepting everyone for who they are in education. This is powerful, particularly for anyone who feels at the edges of our classrooms, our education systems, or indeed, our societies. ?? Research has demonstrated again and again the powerful impact of being 'othered' or perceived as different in education and the implications this can have on an individual's lifecourse and experience. ?? I write about the importance of being seen and accepted as our authentic self in education - as educator and as learner - and the transformative possibilities this has for more positive educational and lifecourse outcomes. ?? Would love to hear your thoughts on this too. #education #inclusion #compassion #educaring

The 4 Pillars of Inclusion by the International Bureau of Education 1. Inclusion is a process. That entails that inclusion has to be seen as a never-ending search to find better ways of responding to student diversity. It is about learning how to live with difference and learning how to learn from difference. In this way, differences come to be seen more positively as a stimulus for fostering learning among children and adults. 2. Inclusion is concerned with the identification and removal of barriers. Here barriers may take different forms; some of which are to do with the way schools are organized, the forms of teaching provided and the ways in which children’s progress is evaluated. Consequently, it is necessary to collect, collate and evaluate evidence about these factors in order to plan for improvements in policy and practice. This involves using evidence of various kinds to stimulate creativity and problem-solving. 3. Inclusion is about the presence, participation and achievement of all students. Here ‘presence’ refers to where children are educated and how reliably and punctually they attend school; ‘participation’ relates to the quality of their experiences while they are present and therefore must incorporate the views of the learners themselves; and ‘achievement’ is about the outcomes of learning across the curriculum, not merely test or examination results. 4. Inclusion involves a particular emphasis on those groups of learners who may be at risk of marginalization, exclusion or underachievement. This indicates the moral responsibility to ensure that those groups that are statistically more at risk are carefully monitored and that - where necessary - steps are taken to ensure their presence, participation and achievement within the education system. #inclusion #integration #equity #education #inclusiveeducation #diversity #specialneeds #barriersinneducation

This is so true. Children need to see diversity and inclusion from early on in order for they themselves to be able to challenge biases and appreciate differences in the future. It is certainly important for schools to build inclusive environments with teacher diversity but this also needs to be seen throughout society. How can we within industry support schools and other educational institutions in increasing diversity? https://lnkd.in/eWqMgqiK #BreakingDownBias #DifferentMakesADifference #TogetherMakesADifference

As an inclusive educationist, I face numerous challenges in my work that stem from the diverse needs of students. One significant hurdle is the lack of resources and support within the educational system, which often limits my ability to provide tailored instruction for each learner. Additionally, there is a persistent stigma surrounding disabilities that can affect the attitudes of both peers and educators, making it difficult to foster an inclusive environment. I also encounter the challenge of balancing curriculum standards with the individual learning paces of my students, which requires constant adaptation and creativity. Despite these obstacles, my commitment to creating a welcoming and equitable learning space drives me to advocate for systemic changes and to collaborate with families and communities to ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed. What are your main personal and professional goals for 2025? #iamwardahshakir #inclusion #education

I can really get behind the sentiment of this article. You can't have inclusion without 'othering'. Inclusive education has become a nice euphemism for special education. We are stuck with inclusion as we do not have a vision of what a universal education system looks like. An Integrated Multi-System of Supports has great potential here to move away from student centered deficit (e.g. making adjustments) and instead focus on the idea that all young people will require supports at some point in their education journey. Who is going to be brave enough to do education differently? https://lnkd.in/gjStP2hP #Inclusion #Education.

Reality, Equality, Equity, & Justice in Education This is a famous cartoon in the world of Education & one of the topics that I like to include in #PD sessions for my #teachers so that they can understand the difference. This is a crucial topic & it's essential to address all 4 concepts. #Reality: Acknowledging the existing disparities & challenges in the education system is the first step. Without understanding the real conditions & contexts of students, efforts to promote fairness may miss the mark. #Equality: Providing the same resources to all students ensures that everyone has a baseline level of access to education. However, equality alone doesn't account for the different starting points of each student. #Equity: Recognizing that some students need more support to reach the same level of success as others is crucial. Equity ensures that students receive the specific resources & support they need based on their individual circumstances. #Justice: Addressing & dismantling the systemic barriers that create & sustain inequities leads to long-term, sustainable change. Justice ensures that the education system itself becomes more fair and inclusive over time. Applications for Schools 1- #CurriculumDesign: -Reality: Develop a curriculum that reflects the diverse cultural backgrounds of students in the school. -Equality: Ensure all students have access to the same quality curriculum across all classes. -Equity: Adapt teaching methods & materials to meet the unique learning needs of each student. -Justice: Integrate social justice education, teaching students about fairness & the importance of challenging systemic inequities within the school & beyond. 2- #ResourceAllocation: -Reality: Acknowledge the varying needs of students within the school & each class. -Equality: Provide a baseline level of resources to all students. -Equity: Allocate additional resources & support to students who need extra help to succeed. -Justice: Advocate for & implement school-wide policies that address the root causes of disparities, such as reviewing and revising disciplinary practices to ensure they are fair & non-discriminatory. 3-#TeacherTraining: -Reality: Recognize that teachers come with different levels of experience & cultural competency. -Equality: Offer professional development opportunities to all teachers to ensure a high standard of teaching. -Equity: Provide targeted training and support for teachers who work with students facing greater challenges, such as those with learning disabilities or from disadvantaged backgrounds. -Justice: Promote a teaching culture that values and practices inclusivity and social justice, encouraging teachers to address and challenge systemic inequities in their classrooms. By recognizing the unique needs of each student & addressing systemic inequities, we can move towards a more just & inclusive educational environment within our schools. Let's work together to make education a powerful tool for positive change.
