Essential reading for our sector, and highlights how critical early intervention and prevention is to support children and young people experiencing mental health distress as a result of child maltreatment. Case workers, youth workers, adolescent and family counsellors, young parents playgroup facilitators among many others all play a vital role in supporting mental health outcomes. They intervene when there is a crisis, refer for extra support, create care teams around children and young, and build mental health literacy and skills with both children and young people and the adults in their lives. #ACMS #prevention #earlyintervention

Building on the World Health Day theme of "My Health, My Right," we must move beyond raising awareness about individual health rights. It's crucial to advocate for policies that remove barriers to seeking care. In many countries, the criminalization of attempted suicide remains a significant obstacle. This not only adds stigma to mental health struggles but also discourages individuals from reaching out for the help they desperately need. Therefore, it's time to shift our focus from awareness campaigns to active advocacy for policy changes that prioritize accessible and stigma-free mental healthcare. This will empower individuals to exercise their fundamental right to health and well-being.

In the spring of 2023, Informing Change engaged California parents and caregivers through a series of focus groups for our Oakland neighbor Children Now, a non-partisan research and advocacy organization. Children Now has published a brief, "Big Feelings:?Parents and Caregivers Need More Help to Support Children Under 5," documenting their findings from these discussions, which centered on parent and caregiver experiences and ideas on how the state could best support early childhood social-emotional development and mental health: https://lnkd.in/g3daGTjJ
