?? Mentorship: A Key to Leadership Development These are the cutest neurons I've ever seen ?. When neuroscience validates an approach, process, or strategy, you know it's worth investing time and energy in leveraging its potential for meaningful impact. ?? ? One mentee's experience: A young professional approached me for advice on maximizing their first mentoring experience. I encouraged them to apply insights gained during a recent coaching program where they participated as a volunteer client. Thus, begin by reflecting on what you seek from the experience and its purpose, then set a goal and three objectives you can share, discuss, and mold with your mentor in your first conversation. Eight months into the journey, the mentee felt they had achieved those objectives and sought guidance on approaching their mentor on what to focus on next. As it happens, this is a timely juncture to review their progress with the mentor, reflect on specific examples of how your objectives were met, and identify the benefits gained. This reflection paved the way for them to set new objectives to guide their next growth phase. By the end of the year, during a group reflection with fellow mentees who experienced a more unstructured approach, she recognized that the structure she created for her mentoring journey benefited the success of her mentoring experience. As we move closer to launching our new Brain-Friendly Change course, one of the challenging conversations Michelle Teunis, Lena Ross and I have been having is the trade-off on accuracy, useful, and interesting in the content we teach. It's a tough one, let me tell you. Ages ago, I wrote about Weick's theory construction trade-off on accuracy, generalisability and simplicity. If you want theory that is accurate and simple, its unlikely to be generalisable. If you want theory that is accurate and generalisable it won't be simple. It's similar when you are teaching - you have a call to make on what you teach, especially when it is complex like applied neuroscience and the stakes are high, like workplace change. You don't want to skimp on accuracy - people get very agitated about "myths". If the audience is change managers, then you really do want it to be useful. I mean what's the point otherwise? And then ideally you do want what you teach to be interesting! What you don't want to do is get carried away with something that is fascinating, but difficult to apply. Kind of like sharing advice on change right?
