Here at One Way Group, we’re acutely aware of the national shortage of qualified electricians across the UK. While many individuals across England are eager to embark on a career in the electrical trade through classroom-based courses, a significant gap remains as too few are transitioning into apprenticeships. The latest #ElectricalSkillsIndex from ECA - Excellence in Electrotechnical and Engineering Services highlights this growing concern by comparing the number of people enrolling in classroom-only courses to those entering apprenticeships. The findings reveal that numerous regions in England are experiencing a concerning shortage of essential electrical skills. Inside an apprenticeship... Such as the lineman IBEW apprenticeship... You're required to get "x" amount of hours in different fields/categories within that trade. Commonly, a union lineman apprenticeship is a 7,000 hour apprenticeship; which isn't just getting 7,000 hours working on a job. That's getting 1,xxx hours working on a transmission job, 3,xxx hours working on distribution systems; both overhead & underground, 200 hours working in a substation, 1,000 hot hours working on energized power lines, 160 in class hours... Getting these hours in different categories is what makes an apprenticeship worth it & helps you get experience to make you a better journeyman. It's also up to you (as an apprentice) to not just "pencil whip" hours to get yourself the hours you need to complete the apprenticeship faster! The apprenticeship is there to provide you the experience and training you need to learn that trade, and it's up to YOU to take the seriously! The question: How can we help prepare our current apprentices to become effective mentors and future leaders? ? The solution: Provide apprentices the opportunity to work with high school pre-apprentices; preparing our current and future apprentices simultaneously! ?? And, when should we do this? National Apprenticeship Week of Course! Today, the 3rd-year Des Moines and Cedar Rapids Telecommunication Apprentices spent time with electrical pre-apprentices from Central Campus. The 3rd-year apprentices did an outstanding job teaching, training, and sharing experiences with the pre-apprentices. They took the time to demonstrate how to accomplish each task, provided guidance, answered questions, and showed great patience; allowing each pre-apprentice the time they needed to complete the task. After the lab was completed, the pre-apprentices evaluated their mentor. They received nothing but positive feedback from the students! 5/5 Would Recommend! ?? And the pre-apprentices? They were engaged and excited about the opportunity to learn something new, but even more excited to hear about the electrical industry from the apprentices they were working alongside. Thank you to our current apprentices and the Central Campus pre-apprentices who participated! This 8,000-hour program will prepare high school and college students for careers as journey-level diesel technicians, equipping them with industry certifications and real-world experience. This groundbreaking initiative was made possible through partnerships with RDO Equipment Co., Papé Group, Youth Workforce Development Foundation, and The AED Foundation, alongside the invaluable support of the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries, Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, and the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council (WSATC).
