Next week marks six months for me as 826NYC's Executive Director, and one of the recurring cautions development folks shared with me when I started was about the "summer slump." If you're not familiar with non-profit fundraising, it tends to run in seasons. Winter is end-of-year giving season. Spring and fall are events seasons. And summer—at least for fundraising—is the dreaded season. But it doesn't have to be. As an educator, I know just how important summer is for our students and our work. While fundraising may fall quiet, our programs do not pause. They do not slump. In fact, they soar. This summer, 826NYC's elementary school camp provides crucial opportunities for young people to learn, create, build social emotional skills, get outside, play, and make connections with one another. 826NYC also runs a robust internship opportunity for high school students to mentor younger students, create unique writing projects, engage in daily professional development, and build their resumes. Learn more about what our interns are up to here: https://lnkd.in/gJHqgWCh And if you're able to help us beat the "summer slump" by making our fundraising match the incredible work being done each day, contribute to the 826NYC summer appeal campaign here: https://give.826nyc.org/
Introducing our 2024 Summer Interns! When you get to work with your own daughter... Sure, I've seen my daughter Chase Carpenter in action. I've seen how her smile and positive energy can draw people in. I've watched her rally groups of young women, whether it's for pure fun and community development, or it's for a purpose-driven event, meant to move the needle. She's an organized, efficient, and magnetic leader. So you may imagine my pride getting to work alongside her this past summer at The Lola. The Lola is a vibrant, women's community space where I've been co-working for the past year and a half. I've also contributed some work to The LOLA team, helping Dana Xavier Dojnik with project management processes and content marketing; starting and co-leading a weekly accountability group with Melissa Uppelschoten, now led by superstar Qiana Avery, SHRM-CP; and co-facilitating the monthly, in-person Founders & Freelancers group with the incomparable energy-shifter Kafi London. In short, being part of The LOLA community has been my jam. When The LOLA accepted Chase as an intern last spring, I knew she'd fit right in. She understood the assignment: to help support the powerful network of inclusive, female entrepreneurs and women in business who want to build a life and career in which we are constantly growing, thriving and succeeding. It's exciting to see young women realize and embrace their own power. It makes me wish I knew what they already know when I was in my 20s! But it was a different time and we were ALL different people. :) I'm excited to keep my focus on what's ahead for all of us. Because women - young, mid-life and wise - will change the world. Established women in business and emerging female leaders: if you haven't felt it yet, lean in. And lean in HARD, because our time is NOW. #WomenInBusiness #FemaleLeadership #NextGenLeaders #MotherDaughterTeam #EmpowerWomen #WomenSupportingWomen #CommunityLeadership #FemaleEntrepreneurs #MentorshipMatters #TheLOLA #WomenWhoLead #CareerGrowth #InclusiveLeadership #YoungLeaders #WomenEmpowerment

"I had an incredible time on the Hill, and it was the best internship I have had because of the people I met and the things I experienced." Interning in Congress can be a great way to jumpstart a career in government. Read Bennie Chang's (SFS'26) advice on how to land a congressional internship. Bruce MacLellan has been such a strong advocate for paid internships that his leadership (and the leadership of a few other enlightened PR leaders) has created a sea change in this area. Most of my students now find paid internships. This wasn't the case five years ago. I fully support the occasional unpaid learning opportunity. A good example is is an agency that recently asked us if we could find a few student volunteers to help them stuff gift bags and set up for an event. In return, the students would get some beauty products. This was a great opportunity for my students -- one afternoon, and they get a behind the scenes look at how a big event comes together. And, importantly, it was optional. No one had to go. (For the record -- there were more than enough volunteers in a few short minutes after the email went out.) Internships, on the other hand, are not optional. Students need to complete an internship to graduate. And I don't know any students who can afford to work an entire summer for free. The students we send out on internship are close to graduation and come with some useful skills. And yes, the time they spend interning is a vital part of their education. What they learn in a real workplace simply cannot be taught in a classroom, no matter how hard we try. I would like to sincerely thank all the employers who take on interns. I know you have to spend time mentoring and teaching them. I appreciate what you do so much -- they are very different people after just a few short months with you! If we want a strong industry filled with smart, creative people, we need to create space for them. Paid internships are one way to create those spaces. I am very grateful that so many employers realize this, and are providing amazing paid opportunities.
Our CPRS members Bruce MacLellan, APR, FCPRS and Adnan Bashir wrote this piece last year for the Toronto Star, outlining?the importance of paid internships in the #publicrelations industry, and their invaluable role in not only enriching our profession but also expanding the #talent pipeline. Timely report from Su Jin Jez and the talented folks at California Competes. Addressing gaps in work-based learning opportunities needs to be a key component of California's new Master Plan for #careereducation. Key findings: - Women were less likely than men to complete paid internships (4% vs. 9%). - White (9%) and Asian (10%) Californians completed paid internships at higher rates than their Black (5%), Latinx (4%), and Native American peers (0%). - First-generation college students were three times less likely to complete paid internships compared to continuing-generation students (4% vs. 17%). As CalCompetes observed, "These disparities can affect students’ careers prospects, and in turn, create ripple effects on their communities, the workforce, and the economy." Proud of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group Foundation's role in the Bay Area K-16 Collaborative - and the several Silicon Valley Leadership Group member companies that have stepped up to change these dynamics. If you're looking to get involved in the Bay Area, see: https://lnkd.in/g_34AgwY
California Competes—a research organization dedicated to transforming the state's higher education and workforce development—recently released a new analysis that examines disparities in internship access among Californians. The key findings in these disparities hinder careers, communities, and California's economy, and their brief offers key recommendations to address them. ?? https://lnkd.in/gk62_kPB

6 useful personal behaviors I’ve instilled during my Woodson Equity internship thus far. 1. Arrive before everyone else; using that quiet time to get settled and focused. Being ready to go as my colleagues arrive sets a productive tone for my day. 2. Breaking my day into hour-long segments. Tracking my activities this way helps me maximize tasks and maintain productivity throughout the day. 3. Use Excel to log my tasks and progress, ensuring everything is organized and easy to follow. Regularly give situational reports my current status on taskers. The work I input into software is almost anonymous, helping my team stay aligned on ongoing projects and responsibilities. 4. Further my connections both in and outside the office. For instance, during my summer I was selected for jury duty in the Northern District Court of Illinois, I met amazing individuals, some whose paths have since crossed with mine during my daily commute. Our mutual commonality in being veterans and working in finance truly demonstrates the power of maintaining connections in unexpected places. 5. Take detailed notes during meetings, tracking key conversations, and sharing those thoughts with my leadership. Asking questions will uncover valuable insights and develop a deeper internship experience. 6. When communicating electronically, always aim for clarity, conciseness, and professionalism. Avoid poor habits like using overly casual language, or unclear phrasing. Review emails and messages to ensure they reflect my best self and convey my thoughts effectively. I’m glad to be apart of this team of skilled individuals while still unraveling so much to learn. #TheWoodsonWay #PrivateEquity #InsideAnInternship

Meet Murphy Alum, Quinnyata Bellows from the North Shore Country Day School Class of 2015. During her time at DMSF, Quinnyata participated in Affinity Groups and held a Walgreens Corporate Internship. Today, she works as a freelance producer and costume manager. Let’s hear what advice she has to share! ??What was DMSF’s impact on you? ??I learned that staying connected with my community and creating connections that last a life time can benefit me more than any fleeting moments. The people I have met through Daniel Murphy have influenced me in a number of ways. So many doors have opened for me that I never thought I would have access to because of volunteers and staff that have reached out to me during and after my scholarship program. It would be an understatement to say that I have gained a number of mentors that have paved a way for someone like me to flourish in the arts and make a career out of something that was just my passion and curiosity at the time. ??Why was receiving a good education so important to you? ??The older I get the more impactful my education history has been for me. With every decision I make, the skills and ability to navigate through society were just basic lessons taught to me through programming and courses dedicated to ensuring my success in the past. I may not have fully understood the weight of an amazing education in my teenage years but seeing how things could have been more troubling for me now makes me all the more grateful for the opportunities I had. This ever changing appreciation for my education is what makes it so important. ??What advice do you have for current Murphy Scholars? ??Take advantage of everything. This seems like a simple task but I think at a young age it’s easy to look past the small details but every thing that comes your way is a potential door that can opened and explored. Whether that is introducing yourself to someone new or being the first to volunteer, there is absolutely nothing unavailable to you unless you believe it. Thank you for being an inspiration, Quinnyata! #35YearsOfMurphyScholars #AlumniThen&Now #HighSchoolScholarship #EducationAccess

Some of the students got stuck after "What's your name?" and "What do you do?" at our networking workshop. They feel like they cannot ask anything not professionally-related during networking. We told them to ask about their job as follow ups: What is your favorite part about your job? What are your challenges? What is your company culture like? Meanwhile, in the back of the room, Michelle Quevedo-Penn and I reminisced about me breaking the ice by talking about a great carnitas joint around the corner from where we were and how she was looking for ways to welcome new team members. ?? So, what is your networking style? Are you all business? Or are you more casual? What are some of your networking icebreaker questions? And why is it not "What's your favorite dinosaur?" #networkingtips #professionaldevelopment
“You keep saying ‘Your network is your net worth,’ but how DO you network?” We are so glad you asked, interns, because Friday’s summer workshop covered networking best practices, among other things! What an action-packed morning at LA Harbor College for our interns! We started with a networking practice. Then our newest board member Michelle Quevedo-Penn of Poppy Bank answered all the burning financial literacy questions. (No, credit cards are NOT free money!) Then a special treat! Los Angeles Harbor College President Dr. Luis Dorado dropped by to give a warm welcome to our interns before they set off on a campus tour. Thank you for being such a wonderful host! Special thanks to our internship program sponsors who helped fuel our students’ career dreams: Port of Los Angeles and Prologis! #expinternship #opportunityengine #workforcedevelopment #careerreadiness
