“More money, more headcount, and more features won’t get you more success,” I recently came across this post from Pablo Srugo about having a lean team and I totally agree with him. It’s always better to: - Create a small team - Find a product-market fit - Launch an MVP? - Take feedback At the early stages, nailing the product-market fit requires countless experiments, and experiments always lead to change. A small team is more adaptable to change. - change in features? - change in messaging? - change in USP Lesser people can swiftly adapt to these changes with less management and more hands-on work. Hiring too many people before achieving product-market fit often leads to layoffs and unnecessary complications. That's why I'm a firm advocate of lean teams - especially in early stage startups. We keep hiring for Entourage left, right and center. And, a lot of roles come without an elaborate JD ;) I can be wrong, (we’re still trying that out), but when you’re building things from scratch, you need more people who “want” to do things and then people who “know” how to do things. - Doers > Thinkers - Dirty Hands > Fancy CVs - Been there, done that > Been there, here’s the certificate In simple terms, willingness & ability to get sh*t done! What’s more secure? Early stage start up or public company? For years the notion was always that public companies were a much safer bet than startups but with the recent layoffs from the big brands now I’m not so sure. Startup: Pros - “lean team” everyone onboard is essential, if they have runway you are set! Cons - Runway! Most startups still fail Public:? Pros - less likely to run out of money? Cons - you could receive the dreaded layoff email I feel like perception has shifted on this topic over the past few years. What are your thoughts? #hiring #bioinformatics
