Thank you Jason Smith at Hobo Forge Survival for joining Stuart Farris and Josh Forman to represent The Donovan and Bank Foundation at Exelevate’s Family Fly Fest fundraiser to support our mission to help the Nation’s Special Operators bring closure to their warrior story and transition to a life of peace, contentment and balance. The activities we do beyond our careers often have an outsized impact on our lives and shape who we are in a way that often reverberates in our work. If you know me, you know that I am a passionate birder. This hobby fuels my curiosity, attenuates my senses, gets me out into nature, and has connected me to some of the most wonderful people I've ever met. I am a better human because of it, and I recommend birding to everybody. To raise money for the fantastic Shaver's Creek Environmental Center, I (along with some other brilliant birders) compete in the annual Birding Cup! Please consider donating at the link in the comments to support our team in our effort to bring home the cup (it would be our second win, NBD). Also, if you're curious about birding, let me know, and I'll be happy to share tips and tricks and maybe even take you out into the field sometime! Here's a fun bird fact for those who are curious: The chimney swift is a common, swallow-like bird seen in the skies of eastern North America. Once you learn to spot them, you'll see them flying around nearly every day during the warm months in Pittsburgh. What you won't see is one land. They are highly specialized for flight and have very reduced feet (they are part of the clade Apodiformes, which stands for footless forms and also includes the hummingbirds). They cannot land on horizontal surfaces, walk, or really do much terrestrial stuff other than cling to vertical surfaces like the chimneys and hollow trees that they nest in. In fact, when they aren't breeding, they can go MONTHS without landing at all!

It was an honor to serve RaiseUp Families as their Executive Director for nearly 4 years. In that time, the organization experienced unprecedented growth: ? Expanded Board of Directors by 50% ? Doubled the number of families (clients) being served ? Client outcomes improved by 100% (average income increase in signature 9-month HandUp program went from 35% - 71%) ? Client graduation rate improved from 80% to 91% ? Revenue growth from $450,000 to $1,000,015 (donations from private sources) These outcomes are a result of the Board of Directors and staff working together towards a common goal, each person utilizing their unique skills and abilities in their individual role to help the bus arrive at its desired destination. They are the result of hours and hours of innovation, hard work, and determination. As RaiseUp Families celebrates its 30th Anniversary of stabilizing families from vulnerable communities who face unexpected financial crises so their children can focus on their education, giving them the opportunity for a better life, it needs a full-time leader with passion, vision, and experience to lead it forward. I could not be happier that Kate Yadan will pick up this torch and lead RaiseUp into the future! "We know that change is a natural part of life, and those who embrace it grow while those who do not slowly die, metaphorically. Two of the largest obstacles to change are ego and pride. Moving out of our own way is the toughest battle most of us will face. Giving up our seat for someone else, stepping down when it's time for someone else to step up, and gracefully exiting when we have added all the value we can, are what we should all strive for." -Angela Burgess, Are You on the Right Bus?
We are THRILLED to annouce a big change at RaiseUp Families! After a rigorous search, Kate Yadan was named our newest Executive Director as of March 1, 2024! Kate's knowledge and experience are unparalleled, and more importantly, her passion for stabilizing families from vulnerable communities so their children have the opportunity for a brighter future knows no bounds. We are incredibly grateful to Angela Burgess for sharing her vision and leadership with our clients, our staff, our board of directors, and our community over the last four years and wish her well in her future endeavors! Come out and welcome Kate at our 2024 RaiseUp Families Graduation Celebration! Sponsorships and Tickets are on sale now: https://lnkd.in/g3pn6Bjk

Becoming Techstars mentor this year has introduced me to some inspiring founders, including Elya Lane of Corra Health, who's developing an AI-powered health assistant. Elya is developing an AI-powered health assistant, drawing from her personal experiences. She's currently fundraising for a new service animal to support her as she builds her company. If you're passionate about backing innovative founders and their projects, consider contributing to Elya's fundraiser. It's a tangible way to support a founder who's addressing the needs of an often overlooked demographic while turning personal challenges into impactful solutions. https://lnkd.in/es5dhrce

In 18 years of competing in the 'Hood Bowl' fantasy football league, I've learned that success isn't measured by personal achievements but by the impact we make. Transforming winnings into donations for causes and communities reinforces the true essence of leadership: service. Like puppies and insider knowledge from Part and Sum's corner of the consulting/agency world? Roughly once a quarter, I share a newsletter with a small group of agency partners and collaborators. It tends to be pretty insidery (POV on trends in our industry, wins from the last quarter, things we're tinkering on, company culture stuff, etc...). I'm getting ready to send one next week, if you're interested in getting on the list send me a note or comment below. Also - the puppy part - I’m donating $5 to the Humane Society of New York for each new email to join the list. Insider baseball and puppies… what’s better than that?
