This beautiful quote from UNOS CEO, Maureen McBride PhD, captures it all: “Each transplant represents an individual, a family, a story, and a life saved or improved. Each transplant also represents a selfless decision made by a grieving family or an inspired living donor, and it is incumbent upon us to honor each and every one of those irreplaceable gifts. Solid organ utilization from donors who underwent #ECPR, systematic review aimed to examine outcomes for both graft & recipients: ?? 13 studies/130 donors (mean age 36y)/322 organ donations included ?? mean #ECMO run duration 4 days ?? kidneys most often transplanted organs (68%), followed by liver (22%), heart (5%) ??very good short-term graft survival rate: kidneys 95%, lungs 92%, liver 88%, heart 73% ?? functional outcomes at 1y follow-up (4 studies/230 organs): graft losses 36% hearts, 17% livers, 4% kidneys Organs can be successfully used after #ECPR with very high graft/recipient survival; use of organs from these donors might be suitable strategy for expanding donors pool. The board of directors of the OPTN established the Expeditious Task Force in September 2023 to study and make recommendations on ways to increase the number of donated organs used for transplant and to increase the efficiency of the organ placement process.
