(TSX:CFP) will permanently shutter a sawmill in Bear Lake, B.C., indefinitely curtail one production line at a pulp mill, and suspend a planned investment to revitalize its shuttered sawmill in Houston, B.C. Canfor blamed the “persistent shortage of economically available timber and challenging operating conditions in northern British Columbia” for the closure decisions. The closure plans include permanently shutting down its Polar sawmill in Bear Lake, north of Prince George. That closure alone will affect 180 employees. Big trees + blue paint = pending timber sale. A century of fire suppression in the Southern Appalachians, along with some well-intentioned reforestation in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, has resulted in an overabundance of Pinus strobus (Eastern white pine) on sites that should be anything but. A group of us were in the field today, discussing how to engage state and private partnerships to cut the white pines, kill most of the non mast-producing hardwood sprouts, do site prep burns, and plant shortleaf pine, which should steer this area back within the natural range of historic variation - less an elk here, mountain lion and woods bison there, of course.

Terrible economic news from British Columbia continues! Unfortunately, we learned yesterday that Canfor has permanently closed Polar, and to add insult to injury, we hear that the planned reinvestment for the Sawmill at Houston, British Columbia has also been suspended. I had involvement in the reinvestment sawmill project at Houston through my office, Mid-South Engineering Richmond, as we had a supporting role in designing the groundworks Civil Engineering for the development. The closures and related investment suspensions are a clear and direct result of the policies of the Government of British Columbia. The ruling party has been catastrophic for the Forest sector. Neither planning working forests or thinning to avoid forest fires, nor using the abundance in our forests for economic success. I don't know how many direct jobs have been lost, but I know that entire communities are being decimated and are hurting. Many industry related jobs and businesses are hurting. The economic impact of the regions as well as the entire province are negatively affected. Sawmills and Planermills are well paying jobs for people so that they can support their families, and everyone in those small towns know somebody who works at a Wood Products Processing Facility.
