With the publication of The Right Not to Remain Silent: The Truth About Mental Health in The Legal Profession, Professor Thomas GW Telfer (contributing author and co-editor with Beth Beattie and Carole Dagher) continues his advocacy on the need to reform attitudes toward mental health in the legal profession. Including candid essays from members of the legal profession living with mental health and addiction issues, the book provides encouragement while challenging how mental health is perceived in law and beyond. Along with his co-editors and fellow contributors, Telfer hopes that the stories of bravery and resilience in The Right Not to Remain Silent will present an incontrovertible case that reform can’t wait. https://buff.ly/3QqPUYS

Subject: Send a letter: Take action: Support the Pride in Mental Health Act Body: Our LGBTQIA+ children face mental health challenges at a higher rate than their peers, and they’re often the target of bullying, discrimination and horrible cruelty. Too often, these challenges play out in our classrooms and our healthcare facilities, but educators and healthcare professionals find themselves strapped for the resources they need to provide meaningful support. While some extreme elected officials target our LGBTQIA+ youth, Sens. Laphonza Butler and Tina Smith and Rep. Sharice Davids are providing real solutions and investing in accessible, affirming mental health and crisis intervention resources with the introduction of the Pride in Mental Health Act, which will be game-changing for all of us trying to support our kids. The Pride in Mental Health Act works to close LGBTQIA+ mental health information gaps, improve physical and mental health for at-risk youth, and ensure all our students have access to the mental health supports they need. Your help is needed to ensure the Pride in Mental Health Act is passed in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Click "start writing" to send a letter to your senators and representative now. Once you provide your information, you will be given a letter for each legislator based on their current support for the bill. Can you join me and write a letter? Four lessons from our dynamic panel! 1.) You can help your community by developing services, products or methods to alleviate the troubles of anyone's day. 2.) Research and action gap needs to close. Push more researchers towards policy and advocacy. 3.) Have the courage to stand against adversity as you acknowledge issues in your environment. There will be pushback, but do what you can to avoid discouragement. 4.) Last, but maybe most important. You can break a lot of the mental health issues when we combat the economic circumstances.

?? Navigating the Intersection of Mental Health and Justice ?? For many years, I've had the honor of providing expert witness testimony in both criminal and civil court cases, shedding light on the complex interplay between mental health and the legal system. As a mental health expert, my role extends far beyond the confines of a courtroom. I am a voice for those whose struggles may otherwise go unheard—a beacon of understanding and advocacy in the pursuit of justice. In criminal cases, I work tirelessly to provide insights into the psychological factors that may influence behavior, helping to unravel the complexities of the human mind and inform legal proceedings with empathy and expertise. In civil cases, I lend my expertise to a multitude of matters, offering nuanced perspectives on mental health issues that may impact the lives of individuals and families. But beyond the legal intricacies, my work is driven by a deeper purpose—to advocate for the rights and well-being of those affected by mental illness, trauma, and adversity. I believe in the power of empathy, compassion, and evidence-based intervention to effect positive change in the lives of individuals and communities alike. As we navigate the intersection of mental health and justice, let us strive for a system that is fair, compassionate, and informed. Together, we can create a world where every voice is heard, every story is valued, and every individual is given the opportunity to heal and thrive. ???? October 10 is World Mental Health Day. Today, SABA Toronto acknowledges the critical importance of promoting mental health for the legal profession. We urge all employers – law firms, legal clinics, government, public interest organizations, private and public businesses, among others - to engage in critical, open discussions on this topic and to cultivate environments where lawyers facing mental health challenges can address them without fear of judgment or jeopardy. Our profession is strengthened when lawyers are empowered to take necessary steps for their well-being.
