In my last post, I announced a fundraiser for communication equipment for a military unit where a close relative of mine is serving. I want to thank everyone who has already contributed. I know LinkedIn isn't the ideal platform for fundraising, but I don’t have profiles on other social networks. So, in addition to donations, I’m asking you to help spread the word about this cause. Who are we raising funds for? This is a new special operations unit. As you can imagine, they are the ones tasked with complex and daring missions that can change the course of events. Depending on the amount raised, we’ll choose the best charging stations. Of course, we’d like to buy those that will last longer. Why are we raising funds? Because war is expensive. There’s never enough of everything. It’s not that the government provides nothing - this is simply not true. But there are critically important items that directly impact the lives of people who, risking everything, have agreed to protect our future. Not only the future of Ukraine but also the future of people who don’t want to live under a dictatorship. Hey Guys, This is for a student project for a class I am doing on film production We reached the 60% mark on the Kickstarter. But we need to make it to 100% or Kickstarter will refund the money. This morning my social media reminded me of a post from 2 years ago. It was a letter I wrote about an ongoing challenge with a large local funder and their response to me pushing one of their influential donors to donate food after events instead of tossing. It was the beginning of the end of my time at the nonprofit I founded and the end of my belief in our local nonprofit sector. Influential donors and funders are constantly asking for critical feedback and innovative ideas so they can be catalysts for deep, meaningful change. What they don't say is giving this feedback will likely be the end of your welcome. Do I regret speaking up? Nope. What I regret is not doing it earlier. Once I started sharing more publicly the very real challenges within our local emergency food and nonprofit space, the hard conversations started taking place. Unfortunately, because the conversations were uncomfortable and showed the real issues holding back progress, these bigger & more established nonprofits shut it down and made sure I was not included. Why? Money & power. As I was told many times, 'this discourse is making us all look bad'. Oh? I think what makes us 'look bad' is thousands of our neighbors going hungry when I can SEE food they could have DAILY. Why were my biggest challenges coming from inside the house? What I learned from my time was to speak up sooner. The lack of alignment went further than I thought and had found a place on the board I built. I was hopeful raising and replacing the funds lost by 1 donor would get me back in the good graces of my board. I was naive. Now, I have clarity. For many years I listened to those who kept acting like I was the problem. My approach - wrong. Talking publicly - wrong. Continuing to use data to show what's happening vs. what's promoted - wrong. What I know now is the PROBLEM is the PROBLEM, not the people trying to solve it. System change is hard. It's even harder without transparency, honesty, and clarity. Now, I get to spend my time and energy with others who are the ones DOING the work, not talking about it. These groups don't have the same access to power & resources but they get things done. It is working with these groups and people who inspired me to keep going when the work was hard. The work is still hard, but now the politics and bureaucracy that kept me scared and silent are gone. So, his willingness to be an expert in the things that he's expert in is what I think, I appreciate most about him.

SLAPSTICK SATURDAY 130 45 NIB CALCULATING SUCCESS ON THE BATTLEFIELD REFLECTIONS: THE MEANING OF TRIUMPH AND SURVIVAL In a moment of clarity, I came to think about the measurement of our success against the backdrop of the incredulous death and destruction of the war. I began to pick on the small things to figure out some kind of guide. For instance, did it matter how far we marched or climbed to reach the target? Was there some number representing these achievements? Of course, numerous missions and enemy confrontations existed. Although we succeeded in each assignment, our lives often rested on narrow escapes. Was there some number that would foretell the outcome, or was achievement the only guide? Perhaps we would rise one morning to find the war had ended as we slept? After all, Vietnam’s night was a day in the U.S., and it was possible. But who was I kidding? -The days passed, blending into one another so that time lost meaning. In the end, I gave up on my computations. It did not matter whether we won or lost a battle or failed in a mission. All that remained relevant was returning alive and uninjured. That represented the sum of my metrics: We each had a hand in saving our brothers, which was all that mattered. Unfortunately, not all of us would make it. And that became one ugly part of Vietnam that followed me home. The book launch is coming up fast.
