International Rivers is excited to be part of the Green Film Festival of San Francisco for the screening of #WaterforLife, a powerful film that delves into water rights, Indigenous beliefs, and resource extraction through the eyes of Latin American community leaders. ???? ?? After the screening, join us for a special Q&A led by International Rivers' Board Chair, Melina Selverston-Scher, along with producer/editor María José Calderón and director/producer Will Parrinello. About the film: Water For Life reports from the frontline of the resistance, following three Indigenous activists in Latin America as they face death threats and murder to safeguard their precious water resources from foreign corporations and corrupt governments. The right to clean water is a global issue but in Latin America, it has become a matter of life and death. A story of courage and determination, the film asks how economic development can grow in harmony with environmental protections and why we tolerate unbridled greed and profiteering at the expense of human life and our precious planet. Above all, Water For Life illuminates a growing recognition of Indigenous rights and a rising demand for corporate responsibility and environmental justice that’s being seen around the world. Free Union Piney Woods is a place where you had free people of color, never enslaved, never sharecropping. They showcased the prosperity and the resilience that could be built even without the level of financial investment other areas have seen. The fact that Piney Woods has been so resilient without those investments, both challenges the notion of what is not possible in rural communities of color but also expands the imagination of what is possible if we have a movement to address systems of Black land loss. Check out some inspiring EJ and social justice leaders discussing how important it is to disrupt dominant narratives, among other things as we look ahead to the new year.
“Since 2017 — Dakota Access Pipeline, the struggle at Standing Rock — we interrupted the dominant narrative of who Native people are in the 21st century. The interruption of that narrative was not a change, but it gave us the opportunity, and we have been organizing, mobilizing on the local level, on many different climate justice struggles…. In fact, in the last 20 years, every major climate struggle has been led and/or initiated by Native peoples.” — Judith LeBlanc,?Native Organizers Alliance Six women leaders in the environmental justice movement came together to discuss our way forward at an event hosted by Tides Foundation’s WE LEAD fund. As populations grow and the impacts of climate change continue to increase, there is an urgent need to unite around protecting and conserving water, one of our most precious resources. This #WorldWaterDay, the IRF recognises the vital link between water and peace, and the important role that transboundary cooperation plays in supporting social, economic and environmental prosperity. The IRF, in collaboration with Global Environment Facility and Mekong River Commission Secretariat, published a video highlighting the necessity of transboundary river cooperation to ensure the ongoing protection and resilience of the world’s rivers and waterways. ?? In this video, the Global Environment Facility’s?CEO Carlos Manuel Rodriguez highlights the positive impact that transboundary river organisations like the?ICPDR have on their rivers and surrounding communities. ?? The Mekong Rivers Commission’s CEO Dr Anoulak Kittikhoun speaks about whole of basin cooperation as one of the four fundamental shifts needed to transform the Mekong River. We must accelerate efforts to work together across borders. Let’s use cooperation as a tool to achieve peace and security for our rivers.
