The recognition of patients' experiential knowledge is increasingly acknowledged as a valuable complement to healthcare professionals' traditional, formal clinical knowledge. In their comprehensive narrative review, Vincent Dumez and Audrey L’Espérance challenge the dominant model of knowledge in healthcare by making various forms of patient knowledge more explicit and tangible. They classify six types of patient knowledge—embodied, monitoring, navigation, medical, relational, and cultural—grounded in three main sources of learning: the self, the system, and the community. This classification aims to better define patient knowledge, enhance recognition, and advocate for its integration into care plans and healthcare relationships to promote more equitable and effective healthcare delivery. Recognizing and integrating patient knowledge into healthcare activities matters for several reasons. Enhancing shared decision-making fosters a more collaborative environment, where care plans are more aligned with patient preferences and lived experiences. Addressing epistemic injustice ensures that patients' knowledge is valued, creating a more just and inclusive healthcare system. Improved patient outcomes result from patients feeling valued and engaging more actively in their care. Let me make this clear! It is a pain in the ass but now two physicians with hybrid DPCs and a dentist with a hybrid DPD in my network. And I as I beta test on their employee base to get results and see what can be reengineered. Trying to work with urgent care facilities and strong networks of practitioner associations is a difficult haul to bring in as we market test. But the academic approach is key. Mapping repetition in care will allow us to view the issue differently with respects respects to managed care. Many great authors worth reading. Richard M. J. Bohmer has written a great book ‘Managing Care: How Clinicians Can Lead Change and Transform Healthcare’, which I highly recommend. I think the aproach of healthcare has to be first tackled internally through group plans created and costumized around small business clinics to stress test strategies with novel models in healthcare practices; especially, private practices.
