It’s happening in every sport, in nearly every market, at every level: to help finance a new stadium or arena and increase revenue, professional sports teams—and some colleges—are developing mixed-use commercial real estate districts around their venues and maintaining ownership in the assets, a concept known as stadium anchored mixed use development. Stadium anchored development is blurring the lines between professional sports and commercial real estate—and has become a somewhat controversial topic for cities, states and taxpayers— so we decided to cover the topic in an on-going blog series. Part 1 in our series is on our hometown Chicago Bears’ on-going quest to build a new stadium and develop a surrounding mixed-use development and the factors that gave rise to the stadium district trend. Last week I had the chance to sit in the King's seat at Wembley Stadium. On the surface, it’s just a chair - no different from the other 89,999 seats in the stadium (though the heated seat button was a nice touch!). What sets it apart is the story behind it, right? Even though the original Wembley Stadium was demolished in 2002, its historical significance remains intact. Why? Because it’s not the bricks and mortar that define Wembley - it’s the stories. Wembley is no ordinary place. Dubbed the "cathedral of football", it’s steeped in history - from England’s World Cup win in 1966 to unforgettable music moments like Live Aid, and other events that have shaped the nation’s cultural and sporting identity. The stadium’s story has been built over almost 100 years and that's what makes even a chair feel extraordinary. For me, this encapsulates the power of storytelling. A place - or a seat in this case - gains meaning when tied to something bigger, like memories, connections, and moments that resonate with people. It’s a reminder that the spaces we create, hold more value than bricks and mortar. They become meaningful when they’re part of a story. So here’s to the places that shape us and the stories that make them special. #Wembley #PowerOfPlace #Storytelling #PWStudent #PlaceMarketing Property Week
