Happy 4th of July everyone! In light of the holiday, we wanted to share a #throwback photo of one of our historic past projects: Independence Hall in Philadelphia! It is where both the United States Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were debated and ratified, making it the birthplace of our country. In 2012 we had the privilege to be the general contractor of the restoration of the iconic clock tower.?While the work was being done on the tower, the scaffolding had a decorative scrim, with an architecturally accurate illustration of the tower, so visitors could still experience the beauty of the tower.

https://lnkd.in/gb8hns3m Fun fact -- because we could all use some fun facts these days. A covered bridge is exactly what its name suggests: a bridge with a roof and enclosed sides, typically constructed from wood. The reason for the covering is quite simple. While there are some theories — most likely with some truth to them — that the roofs were added to?keep animals calm?above rushing water, or to provide shelter for travelers, the real purpose was much more practical. Wooden bridges, which were common in the U.S. and Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries due to the abundance of timber, deteriorated quickly when exposed to the elements. Rain, snow, and sunlight caused the wood to rot or warp, compromising the materials’ integrity and reducing the lifespan of the bridge. Covering the structure?protected?the wooden framework and deck. By keeping the timber dry, the bridge’s life could be extended by decades. Uncovered wooden bridges might last just?10 to 20 years, whereas some of America’s original covered bridges, such as the Hyde Hall Bridge in New York’s Glimmerglass State Park,?remain intact?almost 200 years after being built.?

Last puzzle: Corporate memory... The re-invention of the wheel is ever with us. The reason for singling out the the round tower at Onehoue in Norfolk is because the experiment with resin grouting that was conducted here produced so many interesting lessons that are largely lost to the current generation of architects and conservators. It is far from the only example...see what you can find out about the consolidation experiment at Steetley Chapel or the long term behaviour of the "lime method" at Crowland Abbey. This puzzle (20/06/2024) Here is an image of a west country waggon vault (Tisbury). The medieval popularity of such extensive arch bracing probably derived from an abundance of short and bent oak (as opposed to long and straight)...but here comes the puzzle: Many (if not most) waggon vaults have been ceiled with lath and plaster: When was this done? How many successive times has it been done on the same roof?

LISTED BUILDING CONSENT APPLICATION! York Georgian Society have considered proposals for the former Little Betty’s at 46, 48 and 50 Stonegate. The building has 15th and 16th century origins, 18th and 19th century alterations, and is Grade-II* listed. The proposals seek to convert the vacant cafe into a high-end licenced bar, remove modern decoration, reconfigure back of house spaces and install service runs for beer python pipes. ?We support the principle of reuse of the vacant upper floors and welcome the proposals to reveal historic features such as flagstone floors and timber-framed walls. ?However, we have concerns with the level of information provided, as this is a well-researched building of medieval origin. More research is needed to fully understand the impact of some of the proposals on this important historic fabric. Removal of masonry infill panels and stone hearths are some of the proposals we have questioned. Want to learn more or have your say? The deadline for comments is 23 July. Find the application (24/01018/LBC) here: https://lnkd.in/ehitF-Eb *********************** The York Georgian Society are a local amenity group that exists to preserve, enhance appreciation of, and share learning about, all things Georgian in York. SPACE IDENTIFIERS (656 SEPT 2019 Gautam Shah) https://lnkd.in/fXDMPn5?Enclosures, man-made or natural, are very evident from the change in environment they cause. The enclosures, like shell, roofs, coverings, awnings, curtains, partitions, ceilings etc. create a dimensional space. A space created by an enclosure is far more enduring then one defined by the bounding. A very strong enclosure creates an isolated space, with very limited relevance. However, translucency of the enclosure allows exchanges. Enclosures become vibrant through transgressions, as extrusive encroachment or intrusive yielding. It creates a wide variety of purposive settings.

H is for Hammerbeam! Hammerbeam roofs are among the most impressive achiements of late medieval carpenters. They're a heavenly sight, often supporting wooden angels and elaborate Gothic ornament. Structurally, they're peculiar. But how on earth did these roofs come about? I give some answers in the latest of my A-Z of Historic Buildings. https://lnkd.in/eUQwd_A8

?????? ???? ???????? ?????????????? ???????? ???????? ????????? Nature bestowed us with everything good. Humans invariably take it on themselves to turn these good to bad. One such gift from nature is our barefoot. Most of us aren’t using this gift the way it is meant to be. When is the last time you have seen anyone walking barefoot? We believe (or made to?) that shoes are mandatory to cushion the shocks from walking and running. As always, Nature knows this very well and that’s why we are gifted with Arch in our foot. Architects believe that arc is one of the best shape to support huge load. Arc derives its strength from its shape itself. Any load above the arc is distributed along its circumference unlike other shapes where the weight distribution won’t be even. Reason why arc is frequently used to support bridges. And we do what we are good at. Turn the good to bad. We adorn our foot arch with super cushioned shoes. So, Instead of strengthening the arch (by walking barefoot), we do the opposite. Tarahumara, a reclusive Mexican tribe known for its superhuman running capability, runs hundreds of miles with zero cushion sandals. We don’t need to run like them. At least we can walk barefoot. Often, the best way to cushion your foot arch is not to cushion it.

Rate of decay: I took this photograph the other day at English Heritage's Battle Abbey. It is a stone reveal on the Abbey dormitories. It got me thinking about our monuments and the rate in which they decay, the loss of historic features and detailing.? What would you do here? Feel free to list your preference in the comments.A) Nothing, leave as is, it is a natural process of the material.B) Reconstruction of the arch: Carve new stone, using selected similar quarried materials.C) Minor repairs on missing elements/ detailing.D) Addition of some form of covering i.e lead dressings to slow rate of decay.E) Other method not listed here.F) A combination of the above. G) Reface using a stone mix. (Note: For discussion only) #heritage?#conservation?#construction?#architects?#buildingsurveying
