What Is The Color Of My Privilege, Our Privileges? How many people of color have heard a friend, a co-worker, an influencer, or a community leader say, “I am just a privileged white guy or girl?” Did it make you wonder, “ If they are privileged and white, what is the color of my privilege, our privileges?” Many have historically and continue to obtain benefits from those pre-existing disparities that give them a better “starting point” in life with white privileges. Had an unconscious bias workshop for students at the alternative provision where I work yesterday run by Every Future Foundation and this conversation came up. Awareness is definitely key and so is action planning. What would it be like if there were more black people willing to step into executive roles and have these conversations in the spaces where certain choices are being made? What would it be like if we became more conscious of the content/media we create and put out there for others to consume? Black culture (as seen via various media) is imitated all over the world! Saying that, I know it is in our hands to create and produce all the representation we want to see that is authentic and a wholistic representation of who we truly are as a people.
