I'm so excited to share that Share My Meals is now a member of the Zero Food Waste Coalition! The ZFWC is a group of companies, non-profit organizations, cities, and other entities working to improve the food system at federal, state, and local levels. This week, I attended the first ZFWC in-person advocacy event on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, meeting with house members to add our voice to the case for more precise food safety guidelines around food donation. By joining the Zero Food Waste Coalition, Share My Meals is aiming to accelerate progress in addressing food waste and build momentum by partnering with other stakeholders across the food system. I had a chance to meet with other advocates and to discuss reducing food waste and ensuring food security for all with House and Senate Representatives. My highlight was to meet with the inspiring Chellie Pingree, Representative for Maine who introduced the NO TIME TO Waste Act and reintroduced the ‘Food Date Labeling Act 2023’. Whether at home, in restaurants, or at events, so much perfectly good food ends up in the trash. It’s time we rethink our habits and make conscious efforts to stop wasting food—for the betterment of the needy and the planet. Here’s how we can make a real difference: 1. Mindful Consumption: Let’s start by serving ourselves only what we can eat. We can always go for seconds, but the food left on our plates often ends up in the trash. 2. Plan Meals Wisely: Planning ahead helps prevent excess cooking or buying more than needed. This small change can significantly reduce waste at the household level. 3. Did you know that almost half of the food in the U.S. goes to waste, which is nearly 3,000 pounds per second? This level of wastage not only squanders resources but also harms the environment. To combat this issue, we need a collective effort. By raising awareness, educating individuals, and implementing measures such as proper meal planning, storage, and donation programs, we can significantly reduce food waste. I'm thrilled to share that I have finished Revolutionizing the fight against food waste with Highfield International Qualifications. ? Reducing food waste is a crucial step towards achieving food security and sustainability. Recovering food waste by connecting potential food donors to hunger relief organizations like food banks and pantries is another effective way to reduce food waste. ? There are many ways to fight food waste at the individual level. For instance, you can plan your meals ahead of time, buy only what you need, store food properly, and use leftovers creatively. You can also donate excess food to local food banks, which has been done by the OLIO app. Fighting food waste is a collective effort that requires the participation of individuals, businesses, and governments. ?? The State of Food Waste in the UK ??? This was what was left on the table next to me last night. I’m sorry but I get a real bee in my bonnet when I see this. It hurts to see our attitude towards food and money. Did you know that £19 billion worth of food is wasted in the UK every year? That’s millions of meals left on plates in restaurants, or thrown away from our homes. ?? In fact, 70% of food waste comes from households, with perfectly edible food being binned simply because we buy too much or cook more than we can eat. At restaurants, food that could feed someone in need is often tossed out without being donated. More and more schemes are being set up to try and prevent this but we are a long way off having model which prevents this. ?? This isn’t just about the food. It’s about the energy, water, and resources used to produce it. We’re wasting our planet’s resources one meal at a time. Next time you sit down to eat, let’s aim to: ??? Only buy what we need. ?? Take leftovers home when eating out. ?? Get creative with leftover meals. Together, we can reduce food waste and make a positive impact on our planet! ?? Did you know that one-third of all food produced in the world is lost or wasted? At Ahold Delhaize, we understand the impact a global organization of our size and scope has on the planet. We work hard to accelerate decarbonization in our value chain, protect nature and biodiversity and scale circular models for packaging and unsold food.? As this Sunday marks The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW), we support the global call to tackle this problem by reducing food waste across our business by 50% by 2030 compared to our 2016 baseline.? ? This summer we entered a partnership with The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN), an international non-profit organization dedicated to alleviating food insecurity while reducing food loss and waste. Amongst others, GFN partners with Feeding America, a nonprofit network of 200?food banks?leading the effort to alleviate hunger in the United States. With Feeding America’s Food Rescue Challenge initiative, they mobilize communities and organizations to rescue quality food that would otherwise go to waste, ensuring it reaches those who need it most.
