The landscape of education and learning research is continuously evolving, and innovative methodologies are at the forefront of this transformation. One such methodology is Mixed Methods Social Network Analysis (MMSNA), which combines qualitative and quantitative research approaches to provide a comprehensive understanding of educational phenomena. In my chapter, I delve deep into the practical application of MMSNA in education research. By mapping out various MMSNA research designs, I offer a detailed analysis of how researchers sequence and integrate qualitative and quantitative methods for data collection and analysis. This work not only builds on the foundational theories of mixed methods research but also extends the empirical findings of Bryman (2006). The unique approach of this research allows for a flexible yet thorough discussion on the application of mixed methods in education, providing valuable insights for researchers looking to adopt these strategies in their work. Curious to learn more about how mixed methods are shaping the future of educational research? ?? ?? Highlight from the 50th LNMB Conference ?? Day three of the LNMB conference will feature a special session celebrating past finalists and winners of the INFORMS Franz Edelman Award, showcasing extraordinary achievements in applied operations research. Co-organized with NGB, who have put together a fantastic programme, this year's session includes a standout presentation on the New Dutch Timetable project by Netherlands Railways, winner of the 2008 Franz Edelman Award. The team behind this ground-breaking work, including Dennis Huisman (Erasmus University & NS) and Erwin Abbink (NS), developed an optimized timetable that transformed the Dutch railway system. By 2006, train traffic had surged, leading to chronic delays and passenger dissatisfaction. Through advanced O.R. techniques, the team crafted a timetable that reduced delays, improved commuter satisfaction, and increased annual profits by €40 million. This "O.R. Revolution" not only showcased the power of operations research but also set a new standard for railway efficiency and customer experience. ? The new European SAFE programme, which aims to support researchers at risk, launched its call for applications on 18 November, with a closing date of 20 January 2025. It will award up to 60 grants of up to 24 months to scientists at risk worldwide for a research stay in a European higher education and research institution. The aim is to enable these scientists to flee the threat they face in their countries and to continue their research work in complete safety in an EU Member State. The scheme is aimed at researchers at the doctoral level or holding a doctorate. The SAFE programme is coordinated by a European consortium whose French partners are Campus France and College de France. Any French institution can apply to host a researcher in exile through this scheme. https://lnkd.in/e82MMvEq

I think there is a need for [perhaps quite radical] changes in the procedure of awarding doctoral degrees in academia. 1. There should be an absolutely neutral independent commission for grading the work. [so-called single-use comission which is assembled specifically for the purpose of grading of one academic work] 2. Supervisors should not grade the work since they are directly involved in it and could not be fully neutral (they are ususally biased to some extent - positively or negatively). 3. Supervisors should not ask any questions during defense - they had all the years of the PhD program to clarify all the aspects in advance (which is also a part of supervision). 4. There are should be 2 separate grades: one for a graduate student (as we currently have), and the second one - for the quality of supervision. 5. In the case when supervisor(s) of graduate students systematically receive(s) low grades for the quality of the supervision, such person(s) should either lose the right for supervision, or be temporarily suspended (suspension could be lifted after taking a set necessary measures for improving the quality of the supervision). And the more PhD defenses I attend the more I am convinced that such changes are really necessary.

There are significant differences depending on the country. For instance, here is a very brief outline of old procedure of awarding degrees in Ukraine, which is now luckily discontinued (but could be interesting to look at as an example of bad practice): PhD student was graded by so-called permanent commission which usually consisted of 20-40 people. In case of university, these people usually came from different departments and different fields. That means, if the person wrote a dissertaition, for instance, in botany, he/she/they will be graded not only by botanists but also, for instance, by immunologists, microbiologists and physiologists. The majority of these people never read the entire work (except 2 reviewers and 2 opponents). The degree was awarded by confidential and anonimous voting by the commission which means no personal responsibility for the outcome. Now the procedure is changed - the commission is assembled for each defense separately and consists of specialists in the field (and also much smaller). This is a significant improvement, and there is stilll space to make it better.

?? I am very excited to announce that my dissertation is officially published and made public online here: With an academic login: https://lnkd.in/gc-D8Peu. Without an academic login: https://lnkd.in/gwnrUtvN Years of extensive research, encompassing both qualitative and quantitative analysis, have culminated in this 85,000-word document. It has been a significant effort, but I am incredibly proud of this achievement and look forward to applying the research findings in impactful ways throughout the industry. ?? I hope you'll take the time to read it. I'm always available to answer any questions, so please don't hesitate to message me if you believe this research could benefit your organization! A huge thank you to my community, and a special extra thank you to all those mentioned in the document's gratitude section. Super excited to work in collaboration with Ignacio Carlucho on one of these PhD projects titled "Exploring foundational models for decision making in autonomous robots": https://lnkd.in/eYaB_87z The central aim of this research is to push the boundaries of robot learning and Embodied AI by investigating how foundation models (trained in a self-supervised fashion) can be effectively leveraged to enhance decision-making capabilities in single autonomous agents operating within complex, real-world environments.
