Atlanta’s South Downtown is undergoing a facelift — due in part to Atlanta Ventures investment into the neighborhood — aiming to turn 10 city blocks and more than 50 buildings into an innovation district for living, working and playing. Owner David Cummings says Atlanta Tech Village is the ‘anchor’ of the community, along with legacy businesses like Friedman’s Shoes, who has called this neighborhood home since 1929 — 95 years. Now, ahead of the 2026 World Cup, efforts to transform the neighborhood are in full swing, as millions of visitors will pass through en route to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in what Cummings calls “The Grand Opening Party” for South Downtown. For business owners and those who work in the community, security is a top concern to attract more Atlantans back into the neighborhood, full-time. My inspiration for this inaugural event came from my deep connection to professional sports and the respect I hold for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, which honors NFL athletes for their excellence both on the field and in their communities. In the same spirit, the CHANGE AGENTS OF PHOENIX event was created to celebrate real estate professionals who excel in their field while also making a lasting impact beyond their transactions. In real estate, where authenticity is key, I believe greatness extends far beyond exceptional performance in transactions. True greatness enriches an agent’s work and purpose—it embodies the ability to think beyond individual deals, to give back, and to positively influence the communities that support them. My mission is to elevate real estate and showcase how the industry, through its unique relationship capital, can serve at a much greater capacity—transforming lives and communities through our everyday business responsibilities.
