?? Urgent Call to Congress: Eliminate the Marriage Penalty for People with Disabilities ?? Friends, Colleagues, Advocates, I'm reaching out to all of you today to join me in a cause that is not just urgent but a fundamental issue of equality. It's about standing up for the rights and dignity of people with disabilities. There's a critical flaw in our system known as the 'marriage penalty,' a rule that unfairly punishes individuals who receive disability benefits when they choose to marry. ?????? When two people with disabilities decide to marry, their combined income can often lead to a reduction in their benefits or even cause them to lose eligibility altogether. This is not just a penalty. It's a barrier to love, companionship, and the pursuit of happiness. This isn't about numbers on a spreadsheet. It's about real human lives, about love and the right to build a family without fear of financial penalty. To create equitable policies, we must raise our voices and prompt legislative change. ??? That's why today, I urge our legislators in Congress to pass a bill that would eliminate the marriage penalty rule. Disability Scoop shares disability representation is unchanged since 2015. ? Just 2.2% of speaking characters in top movies last year were portrayed as having a disability. ? In 2023, 42 major films were studied for representation and not one film has disability representation. ? Most disability representation is white male with a physical disability Disability representation must be increased considerably. Disabled people or people with disabilities? Identity first or People first? One of the takeaways I got from my conversation with Michele A. Williams, PhD, today, was her stance on this question. Language shapes perceptions in accessibility and disability advocacy. Here’s a quick breakdown of the two approaches: Identity-First Language: ? Emphasizes that the disability is an integral part of identity. ? Preferred by many in the autistic and deaf communities. People-First Language: ? Aims to highlight the individual and reduce stigma. ? Originated in the intellectual disability community. Michele’s take is that while the sentiment behind People-first is accurate, it didn't actually change the hearts and minds of people. Instead, it seemed to have the opposite effect of making disability feel like a taboo word. In fact she said, ”It's not a dirty word, it's not a bad word, it is just a descriptor.” Which version do you use in your communications? Share your thoughts below. I had a disappointing experience recently with Hidden Disabilities Sunflower ?? Having had a positive experience with their lanyard when flying, I wanted to try wearing their wristband, as it is more subtle. I have a very small wrist, and so even their small size (they offer small and large) would be too large for me. Their online store indicates that they make a bespoke wristband, but you can only purchase it in bulk. I would have been prepared to pay a bit more to get a bespoke version, even though this would have been another example of a #disabilitytax I contacted customer support, and my ticket was immediately closed (my needs were dismissed as impossible), without any further contact with me. I responded, stating the query had not been dealt with, and was then told 'I am afraid it is not possible to order just one bespoke wristband' and then directing me back to information on their website - completely missing the point of my query (presumably my needs didn't fit with their business plan). I decided to provide some feedback about my experience (see image) and, unsurprisingly, have received no response. This is not good enough. You are not supporting disabled people when you dismiss individual needs and when you ignore feedback from the disabled community. A 'one size fits all' approach doesn't work for disability. Learning that quite a few folks don't realize that disabled peeps don't have marriage equality if you're on state assistance and supports are income-contingent could risk losing. These are quality of life supports in home care, durable medical equipment (DME), food, housing, etc. Dom Evans and I talk about that in following, if interested. Words matter. They can hurt or heal. The language journalists use about people with disability (and older people) leans towards either heroism or pity. Sometimes both in the one article. The link below has the excellent Media Diversity Australia handbook for reporting on disability issues in the media. Good for both journalists and marketing professionals - including social media. They should both note that there is a scarcity of appropriate stock images. A Google image search on 'disability' just shows wheelchair users. This reinforces the notion that only wheelchair users have a disability. The post also has the ABC Guide to disability content which gives a guide to choosing images. And only show the person's disability if it is critical to the story. See link for my synopsis of both guides.
