Sock it to me! Wait, what does a post about socks have to do with business or my experiences working in HR and Talent Acquisition roles? Well, for those who don't know me too well, a fun fact about me is the fact I haven't worn a normal pair of socks in well over 10 years. Maybe it's a fun design, maybe it's a Marvel character, or it's something Goofy (capitalized because he is without a doubt my favorite Disney character). Whenever I had a new direct report assigned to me, I would always try to invest the time in that person to understand what makes them who they are. This way I could find what not only brings them happiness, things that might impact them outside of work, and also better understand what kind of support they might be looking from their direct leader. In my experiences, when you're able to create an engaging team that feels comfortable and supported, you can leverage their diverse strengths, interests and curiosities for the betterment of your team. The more you try to hire your teams within a certain type of personality, or fit them within a certain box, the less room for creativity and growth you're going to find within your team. As I continue to share some exciting updates, this next announcement is especially close to my heart because it’s about the people who shape the heart and soul of RebelDot: our People Team. I often meet people who congratulate me for what I’ve built in the past 6 years. And while I’m proud to have been part of it, the truth is that everything we’ve achieved has been made possible by our incredible people. This team, in particular, has played a huge role in shaping RebelDot into what it is today. For over six years, Roxana Turos and Iulia Pop have been instrumental in building RebelDot into the thriving community it is today. Their dedication and professionalism are just WOW! What makes this team so special? Besides their expertise, it's also their adaptability and teamwork. Roxana and Iulia have seamlessly exchanged the Chief People Officer role four times over the years — when Roxana went on maternity leave. They made this transition so smooth that it was effortless for us, and I’ll always be grateful for that. ?? Although I've always been a fan of a flat people team with no specialization, now, as we continue to grow, the time has come for this to change. ?? Roxana Turos, as Chief People Officer, will continue to steer our People strategy and ensure RebelDot remains an incredible place to work. ?? Alex Laslau, now Head of Recruiting, will focus work with the team on finding the right people to help us grow our community of Rebels. ?? Iulia Pop, stepping into the role of Head of People and Performance, will take on a new challenge by focusing on employee well-being and development—a critical area as we aim to create a space where our people thrive. Q: If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you choose? A: My dream vacation was Italy which I was able to visit last year but now my second choice would definitely be Australia! ?? A: After finishing college my product photographer role was the first job I applied for and SupplyHouse was the only company I interviewed with (I knew it was meant to be). ?? Starting my second week at Modist Brewing Co. and I am spending a few moments in reflection. Last week was a week of personal triumph and loss, professional growth and challenge. But in only a week of being here, I feel completely at home. My journey with Modist started back in 2017/2018 when a Hip Hop open Mic was hosted here. One that I attended many times (weekly for years) and performed at a couple of times (I do moonlight as a Hip Hop artist). Coming to Modist as a patron, I always felt a sense of peace. Living in Minnesota, this is not the case in all spaces. Growing up Black in Minnesota often means that you are frequently in spaces where you are not sure if you belong. But Modist did something remarkable that most businesses (especially pre-George Floyd's murder) did not do. Modist made a space for Black voices, Black art, and Black life to exist. I have been a fan ever since. Fast forward to Fall of 2022, I had the opportunity to interview for Modist's HR & DEI Manager role. I loved the interview process and I was excited about the role, but I turned it down. Wasn't the right job at the right time. So I moved on, still loving my role with my current company at the time. Fast forward to Fall of 2023, with the economic downturn, as many of you here already know, my position was eliminated. So there I was scrambling. A man with a wonderful partner and three beautiful kids, completely unsure of what life was going to look like for the next year, month, even week. Fast forward to February/March. I was able to find a job that fit my family's financial needs but did not fit my family. I was not able to create a balance that I needed in order to show up how I wanted as a husband, a father, an employee, and a human to myself. So, with my newly adopted life mentality (#BoldlyGo), that is what I chose to do, boldly go. For the first time ever in my life, I quit a job without a plan. I quit a job without a job to go to. Jumped out of a plane without a parachute, and took a major risk. I bet on myself. We've all heard the phrase, "If you love something, let it go. If it was meant to be it will come back" (Paraphrasing). Well I never thought that after I turned my dream job down in 2022, that it would come back in 2024. But it did. Now I'm in a position I have never been in before. But I'm working for an organization whose values and work ideology align with mine. I'm partnering with great humans who are willing to put profits aside in order to be humans. I'm in a role in which I am able to learn as I go but rely on a knowledge base and skills I forgot I even had. I have been able to pull from every job, every opportunity, whether I loved it or not, and use what I have learned to help this great organization grow, while enriching employee lives. As the new HR & DEI Manager at Modist, I will continue to boldly go and learn as much as I can along the way. #lifeupdate #boldlygo
