This significant update addresses the environmental risks associated with the use of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5), and dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6) by extending restrictions to a wider range of consumer and professional products. Key Points: - New Restrictions: Effective June 6, 2026, placing D4, D5, and D6 on the market in concentrations ≥ 0.1% by weight is prohibited. - Leave-on Cosmetic Products: Specific restrictions on leave-on cosmetics and other products take effect on June 6, 2027. - Medical Devices: A seven-year deferral is granted for certain medical devices to allow time for safe substitution. - Derogations: Exemptions apply for industrial uses, certain cosmetic applications, and professional restoration of art and antiques. Product categories including Cosmetic and Medical devices that fall within the scope of this regulation: 1. Professional and Consumer Products - Adhesion Promoters and Sealants: Products used for adhesion, sealing, and gluing that contain these substances. - Coatings (including Marine Coatings): Protective coatings where D4, D5, or D6 are used. - 3D Printing and Prototyping Materials: Mixtures used in 3D printing and rapid prototyping that contain these siloxanes. 2. Industrial Applications - Silicone Production: Uses in the production of silicone polymers and other silicon-based substances. ???? European Commission restricts use of a sub-group of PFAS chemicals to protect human health and the environment ???? Today, the European Commission has taken a significant step under the #REACHRegulation by restricting the use of #undecafluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) and related substances, a sub-group of #PFAS. These chemicals are highly persistent and mobile in water, posing unacceptable #risks to both human #health and the #environment. The new restrictions will ban the sale and use of PFHxA in: ?? Consumer textiles (e.g. rain jackets) ?? Food packaging (e.g. pizza boxes) ?? Consumer mixtures (e.g. waterproofing sprays) ?? Cosmetics (e.g. skin care products) ?? Some firefighting foams (for training/testing) However, it won’t impact essential applications like semiconductors, batteries, or green hydrogen fuel cells. This decision is based on scientific assessments from #ECHA’s Committees, reflecting a balance between #environmental #protection and socio-economic impacts. The EU has a duty to protect its citizens against the impact of harmful PFAS substances. The large diversity of these substances, the stragic role of some of their applications, and different toxicological profile of certain categories such as fluoropolymers, lead to complex and uneasy questions about enforceability and proportionality. The PFAS restriction proposal, a landmark proposal to ban all PFAS, is going onto uncharted territory with huge delays. In February 2023, a proposal was submitted to the European Chemicals Agency to restrict to use, sale and production of all #PFAS substances, which catch regular media attention for health and environmental risks but are widely used in applications ranging from kitchen appliances ?? to complex industrial processes. ?
