Ad Age's Ewan Larkin's article on small creative shops winning big brand accounts is a must read! Ewan interviewed a number of small agency execs and clients as well as consultants. A few points to add and/or amplify to this fine work: 1. Be competitive. Small agencies can beat the "bigs" every day! Mercer Island Group's Robin Boehler covered this on stage at Agency Management Institute's Build a Better Agency Summit (BABA) a couple years ago in her "David v. Goliath" talk. We'll undoubtedly discuss this topic again at BABA 2025. Details at Agency Management Institute. 2. Be selective... and then go all-in. That's what the PREACHER folks are doing to win. It's core advice we give to agencies on business development: go after the stuff you can win with everything you have. If you don't, someone else will. 3. Be client centric. Don't ever forget that this is all about the prospect. And they have stress-filled, challenging jobs. 4. Be smart. If you join the "ditch the pitch" chorus you may get your wish and not be invited. An aged challenge, but who's most at fault..? Of course the marketer should take enormous pleasure in designing their single-minded, insights-loaded, realistic and engaging brief, encouraging the very best kind of agency response ...But if it's not forthcoming; do you (a) pull the proverbial rabbit out of a hat (read: do the best you can do with what you've been given) or (b) build the brief collaboratively alongside the client and don't quit until the brief/ all its constituent parts are signed-off by the client. For anyone who believes that unpaid spec work and pitching is an inevitable part of the agency model... "Nice&Frank,?recently named Ad Age’s 2024 Newcomer of the Year, aims to eschew the?traditional pitch process?by inviting prospective clients to a “get-it-all-out session,” a meeting where the agency creates prompts (and sometimes games) for marketers to share their greatest concerns, biggest challenges and past successes and failures. “We ask frank questions, provide hot takes and get genuinely vulnerable with them,” said nice&frank President Tamera Geddes." Indie agencies are the ones who are going to shift our industry for the better--as long as they're not just smaller replicas of the big legacy players. To anyone who's thinking about starting their own agency at some point: We don't need more of the same churn n' burn model, but with bolder colors and a snarkier name. Take the brilliant creative ideas you have flowing through your mind for your clients, and use that same brilliance to build something truly transformative for your people. It's time.

In one way I agree, but in another I really don't. What I agree with: Yes there is a serious problem with the agency model. It's definitely not about finding the right agency. The problem is endemic and it's driven by a model that doesn't reward agencies for the real value they create, doesn't incentivise them to do the right thing and ultimately doesn't deliver value to clients. This absolutely has to change What I disagree with: You can't just miracle random ideas out of thin air. You can't expect an agency to 'be creative' without understanding the challenge that creativity is meant so solve. McCarty sees the discovery phase as 'just part of the revenue model'. I'm willing to bet she wouldn't say this about a management consultant. We fully expect that a management consultant will do a lot of due diligence, interviews and analysis, before coming to conclusions. The problem is that the current agency model has set the expectation that an agency will turn up with a creative concept on day 1. Why? Because that's what happens in a pitch. The agency turns up with a creative idea and gives it away in the pitch. A management consultant, turns up with a tested methodology that promises to solve the client problem. Agencies need to change the commercial and engagement model whereby they take ownership of the client challenge and offer a means of resolution, supported by a methodology. It's not a million miles away from management consultants do, it's just specialised in a different set of problems.
