Have you ever had that feeling where you’ve procrastinated, deferred, and ignored something for so long that you reached the point where you have to give yourself a stern talking-to? That point where it’s either get it done or admit it’s never happening. I have. I’m there now. A goal of mine for this year was to write a monthly LinkedIn contribution that added to the #wealthtech discussion. Something #RIAs and their technology partners could benefit from to grow profits, improve client experiences, or be a better all-around business. As this is my first post for the year, I failed. It’s also telling that it’s being posted at the very end of February (milking the leap year and international time zones) in the vain hope that I can convince myself that I missed one month, not two. Enough about me. Let’s start the conversation. 2024 #leadership team meetings in Practifi have centered heavily on #businessmetrics. I’m a big fan of the ‘what gets measured gets done’ ethos, but with a healthy dose of ‘business is about more than just numbers’ sprinkled over the top. Please spare a thought for the leaders working with me! We’ve been busy refining our focus areas, ensuring the client is both at the center of what we do and at the top of what we measure. We’ve locked in on thirteen (unlucky? lucky? who knows!) core measurements, ranging from experience-based to purely financial. In putting the list together, it struck me that our business (one that produces a technology product) isn’t that different from our clients' businesses (those who produce a client advice product) when you strip away the product element and look at the raw business metrics. So that got me wondering: what key metrics measure business success in RIAs? Market returns and revenues are one thing, but what underlying indicators are relied on to make strategic investment decisions like technology upgrades or embarking on M&A activity? It also made me curious how firms pull all the information together. Is there some excellent information source I’m unaware of that aggregates this information and lays it out for leaders?
