Where does the cannabis plant come from? How do its genetics work? While there are biology focused scientists that can better answer this question than the chemistry-focused team at Digamma (and we will tag them in the final post), we will share what we have learned in this subject. What we see here is a cladogram, which is basically a chart showing evolutionary origins of life forms by showing how closely they are related to each other by showing the last common ancestor. The timeline flows left-to-right events further in the past being farther to the left. Labeled here are the divergence of rosids from asterids, about 100 million years ago, and the divergence of cannabis from hops, about 20 million years ago. Other examples such as lavender, sage, and rosemary are labeled as well. In cannabis breeding, understanding the role of calyx trichome production is essential for gauging the potential potency of future generations. Trichomes, the resin glands found predominantly on calyxes and bracts, are responsible for producing and storing cannabinoids like THC and terpenes. Research shows that trichome density and maturity have a direct impact on cannabinoid profiles, while both genetics and environmental factors significantly influence trichome development. At Silberhaze Genetics, we are investigating whether early trichome production on calyxes can provide reliable insights into whether a breeding program should be adjusted or maintained. While early trichome assessments might indicate cannabinoid potential, they are not the sole factor in determining future potency. Environmental conditions, cultivation methods, and full maturation cycles all contribute to the final cannabinoid content. Despite the advances in understanding trichomes as “factories” for cannabinoids, accurately predicting Total Active Cannabinoids (TAC) remains challenging due to the variability in genetic and environmental factors. I am excited to announce that a review article that I recently wrote as part of my post-doc at Wageningen University & Research has been published on Journal of Experimental Botany. This review focuses on hemp (Cannabis sativa) ??, an industrial crop that serves as a natural biorefinery to synthesise multiple bio-based products, as plant fibers ??, oil ??, chemicals ??, and medicines ??. Our article reviews the most recent advancements on the genetics of important hemp traits for a bio-based economy, including the synthesis of non-intoxicating cannabinoids, oil, terpenes, and fibers. Moreover, recent findings on the regulation of hemp sex expression are also discussed, as this trait interacts with industrial hemp characters. Finally, the review examines how novel genomic technologies ?? and up-to-date breeding tools can further support hemp improvement in the future. Industrial hemp holds the potential to become a staple crop to fuel a bio-based economy ????, and novel bioinformatics and breeding technologies will allow to boost its future development.
