Setting classroom norms and commitments are important for all classrooms, regardless of the age of the students. This is important as different people, cultures, and backgrounds sometimes have different ways of doing things. However, contrary to what you may think, the students SHOULD be included in the creation of these norms and commitments. By collaboratively establishing norms and commitments, students can express themselves and what is important to them – often rooted in what respect means to them. It also naturally builds buy-in for the set of agreements, which saves time in attempting to convince students to oblige. Consider how much easier it is to leave your house in the cold when it is YOUR idea, verses when someone else is trying to convince you. As an educator, this image really resonates with me in terms of how we often measure student progress against standardized expectations. The image shows people being lined up and measured with the same ruler, which reminds me of the challenges our students face when they are held to uniform standards. In special education, each student has unique needs and strengths, and it’s our job to move away from comparing them to generalized benchmarks. This image reminds me of the importance of taking an individualized approach, recognizing that every child progresses in their own way, at their own pace, rather than being judged by a one-size-fits-all standard. We need to move away from "measuring" our students with the same ruler and instead focus on celebrating their individual achievements, big or small. It’s through these personalized efforts and adaptations that each student can grow and thrive based on their own capabilities.

Interesting article about future teachers from the Gen Z generation. It is interesting that every year the number of people interested in teaching is decreasing and the author of the article hopes for the next generation. But I think that the current generation is facing much bigger problems than those that came before it and the combination of mental, moral, and technical problems of the current education system is unlikely to stimulate interest in teaching. https://lnkd.in/etZPYmuR
