In the heart of healthcare, there's an invisible foe that's not a virus or a disease — it's burnout. Yesterday we hosted a webinar with Katharine Kennedy, from Microsoft, Candace McNulty and Ashley R., from the US’s largest integrated healthcare system, and 2023 TEDx speaker and expert in human-centered design Kim Bielicki to learn from their on-the-ground experience integrating AI into healthcare. Candace shared that this occupational phenomenon, as labeled by the WHO, affects one-third of our nursing workforce, highlighting the urgent need for systemic solutions to support those on the front lines of care. Each of our expert panelists highlighted one crucial point: AI can be a game-changer for healthcare, giving workers the flexibility they deserve. But, first, it’s imperative for all key players to be involved in the system’s change — especially those at the forefront of patient care who know the pain points of the end-user and what would make their lives easier or more efficient. As Ashley noted, the healthcare ecosystem is interconnected, “Just because you remove a pebble in one area, it could create a landslide somewhere else for another department or another worker that we didn’t even consider as being something that could create a problem there.” The bottom line: Frontline clinicians need to be involved with how this technology evolves over time. Numbers are telling us a stark truth about healthcare technology. A recent review found that over half of studies linked health IT problems to patient harm or death. That's not just a statistic – it's a call to action. At Narra, we're not interested in pointing fingers. We're focused on solutions. The root of many of these issues? Poor software design that doesn't align with how healthcare actually works. Take medication errors. 81% of health IT-related medication errors were wrong dose errors. That's not just a tech problem – it's a design problem. It's about understanding the nuances of prescribing and creating interfaces that make it nearly impossible to input the wrong dose. We're tackling this head-on. Our approach? Work directly with practitioners to design systems that fit their workflow, not the other way around. It's about creating software that thinks like a healthcare provider, anticipates potential errors, and provides clear, actionable information when it matters most. This isn't just about better tech. It's about safer hospitals, more efficient care, and ultimately, saved lives. That's the real impact we're after at Narra. https://lnkd.in/gZiTeUhJ

#Insights from the Plenary Session on “Global Perspectives on Patient Safety” at the 7th ICPS Quality and Patient Safety: These are fundamentally interconnected, akin to two sides of the same coin. Accreditation is a crucial tool to achieve this synergy. Patient Safety and Employee Satisfaction: Effective patient safety is intrinsically linked to the well-being and satisfaction of healthcare employees. There is no concept of quality without ethically compliant care. Key Challenges in Patient Safety and Quality Care: A. Workforce Development: 1. Future Workforce Preparation: Strategies to train and prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals. 2. Capacity Building: Enhancing the skills and competencies of the current healthcare workforce. 3. Workforce Well-being: Fostering trust in leadership by ensuring a supportive and friendly work environment. B. Cultural and Systemic Integration: 1. Culture vs. Strategy: "Culture will eat strategy for breakfast." Without aligning strategies with the cultural contexts of both patients and healthcare providers, even the most innovative plans will likely fail. 2. Needs Assessment: Policymakers must accurately assess the needs of both clients and the workforce to develop sustainable systems. C. Healthcare Digitization: 1. Patient Empowerment: Technology enables patients to collaborate more effectively with healthcare providers, promoting "Patient-Centric Healthcare." 2. Role of Clinicians: Clinicians must recognize their redefined role as facilitators in care delivery. 3. AI in Decision Making: Leveraging AI to inform policy and decision-making processes using healthcare data. **Lessons from Turkiye's Success in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement** shared by H. Seval Akgün : 1. Challenge Assessment: Carefully evaluate challenges before launching patient safety initiatives. 2. Centralized Electronic Reporting: Implement centralized data collection systems, including incident reporting and patient information systems, to support strategic national decision-making. 3. National Hospital Scoring: Develop a national scoring system for hospitals, with incentives for high performers to encourage a competitive pursuit of quality and affordable care. 4. Workforce Training: Integrate patient safety into the educational curriculum for all healthcare providers, starting at the undergraduate level. 5. Inclusive Regulation Development: Engage all stakeholders in the regulatory process to ensure effective implementation. "Nothing for me without me." These insights underscore the need for a comprehensive approach to patient safety and quality care, emphasizing workforce development, cultural considerations, technological integration, and inclusive policymaking.
