Senior 3D Animator vs. Junior 3D Animator: The Eternal Battle ?? Senior 3D Animator: Walks into the office like a sage who has seen it all. Knows every shortcut in the software, but prefers to complain about how it was better "back in the day." Animates a scene in half the time while sipping coffee, but spends the next two hours perfecting a single pixel. Their folder structure is a mystery even Sherlock couldn’t solve. ???? Junior 3D Animator: Enters with fresh ideas and energy, ready to conquer the world. Learns all the shortcuts... by accidentally pressing them. Stays up all night animating a character's walk cycle, only to realize it looks like they’re moonwalking. Takes feedback from seniors like it's a crash course in humility. The Bond: Senior animators shake their heads at the juniors, remembering their own chaotic beginnings. Junior animators stare in awe, wondering how the seniors make it all look so effortless. In the end, it's a beautiful cycle of learning, mentoring, and the occasional "Ctrl+Z saves lives" moments. To all animators out there, whether you're a senior or a junior, keep creating magic! ?? #3DAnimation #WorkLife #Teamwork

This is something else that has always bothered me...the description laughably didn't even get to the animation part before it cut off. You want a junior 3D animator...but what you are asking for, is not a junior 3D animator. Not only are you asking too much but you're rarely going to get "high-quality" anything from a junior, they're still learning and have little to no experience yet. I absolutely LOVE my baby animators and they can deliver good work, but they need someone to help them get their sea legs before they can hit that mark. It's something I've seen happen more than once, a studio will hire in a bunch of young, fresh juniors who don't know what they're signing up for, pay them pennies, and expect them to produce top notch work for a fraction of the cost. That's just not realistic. Especially when you expect them to basically be an all-in-one pro generalist. Please support hiring juniors with good intentions to actually help grow and cultivate their skills, training them to become those high-quality animators you seek.

Brett Vanderkist, an experienced animator and instructor at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s (KPU) KPU Entertainment Arts (ENTA) program, breaks down the collaborative process of creating animated films and TV shows. He explains that the stunning visuals and lifelike characters are not the work of one person but a team of specialists working together through a production pipeline. At the start, the modeling department creates all the digital assets, from characters and props to environments. These assets are then surfaced, meaning they are given texture and material properties to look realistic, like wood, metal, or plastic, and interact with light properly. Next, the rigging department ensures that the assets can move. Brett compares riggers to car designers, they set up controls that allow animators to manipulate characters and objects. Riggers work closely with modelers to ensure the assets function as needed, creating intuitive systems for animators to use. Brett explains that as an animator, his job is to create realistic movement for characters, vehicles, or creatures. He compares animators to drivers, operating the "car" that riggers have built. Success in animation, he notes, comes from a strong grasp of weight, physics, and motion. Brett highlights that the process demands not just technical skill and patience, but above all, a deep passion for the craft. He encourages students to explore various roles in the pipeline to find what excites them most. By experimenting with different stages modeling, rigging, or animation artists can discover their passion, which fuels the dedication needed for success in the field. Animation is a collaborative, multi-step process that relies on teamwork, technical expertise, and a love for the craft to bring characters and stories to life. #KPU?#KPUEntertainmentArts?#KPUENTA?#kwantlenpolytechnicuniversity?#EntertainmentArts?#VFX?#animation?#modeling?#surfacing?#rigging?#3DModeling?#visualeffects?#production?#CEA?#ceaglobal

I keep seeing 3D Animator job postings to apply to, but when I read the description, many times it's for either modeling, or usually rigging- with animation included. In my experience, riggers don't usually animate and animators don't normally rig as these aspects, despite their being closely related and linked in the core function of a rig, they're 2 very different skillsets. It's good to be familiar with the basics of each in order to assist or communicate with the other properly and intelligently. After seeing many of these jobs, I started questioning my own experience and everything I've learned while speaking with people in the industry, so I decided to look it up. While this makes me feel better, it doesn't help that so many studios still put out jobs that require both, if not all 3- modeling, rigging , and animating. Or at least post it more accurately as "generalist", instead of "3D Animator". Please correct me if I'm mistaken.

I’m an animator and director, and there’s something magical about bringing my drawings to life. It’s not just about creating movement; it’s about crafting moments that resonate, that make you pause and feel something real. Working directly with clients, I get to dive deep into their visions and turn them into animated stories that speak volumes. When someone approaches me with an idea—be it for their business or a personal project—we discuss it and hash it out. We chat, sketch, plan, and then I lose myself in the whole animation production process. From art direction, ideas, concept, storyboarding, character design, artwork, rigging, animation, compositing, editing, post effects, and directing. It’s a blend of artistry and precision, creativity and technology, all coming together to make those initial sketches move. It’s a solo journey as I am self employed, but that’s part of the charm. I call the shots, decide the flow, and tweak until the story feels just right. And when I deliver the final piece and it brings a smile to my client’s face, that’s the ultimate reward. So, if you’ve got a concept you want to animate, let’s chat. I’m all about turning ideas into motion and making sure your story jumps off the screen.
