Excited to share that my research paper on dynamic resource allocation in edge computing has been selected for the Fifteenth International Conference on Computing, Communication, and Networking Technologies (ICCCNT), to be held at IIT-Mandi, in association with IEEE Electronics Packaging Society, from June 24th - 28th, 2024! ??? I am delighted to make available a preprint of my PhD student Shibo Chen's paper, to appear in the upcoming ASPDAC-2025 conference in Tokyo, Japan. The paper, titled "Zipper: Latency-Tolerant Optimizations for High-Performance Buses", details a novel set of architectural optimizations for existing buses. This paper was co-authored by myself and Hailun Zhang of the University of Wisconsin. Zipper is a protocol-level optimization layer designed to reduce communication latency in heterogeneous CPU-accelerator systems. By leveraging request and device-level parallelism and exploiting temporal data locality, Zipper minimizes bus transaction delays without requiring changes to compilers, application logic, or data buses -- all optimizations are buried in the protocol interface. We implemented Zipper on an Intel-based integrated CPU-FPGA platform and applied it to scientific computing and privacy-enhanced workloads, achieving up to an 8x speedup with minimal hardware overhead (as low as 0.9%). The results demonstrate that there are significant performance optimization opportunities for today's buses, especially when accelerator workloads are short-lived. Memory's importance is strongly felt today due to critical technology scaling issues at the circuit & device layers as well as greatly increasing demand for data and its fast & efficient analysis at the system & software layers. We discuss two major specific challenges including the RowHammer vulnerability and the processor-centric design paradigm of computers. We will describe solution ideas and directions to make future computing systems fundamentally robust and fundamentally efficient & high-performance, including intelligent memory controllers, system-memory co-design, and memory-centric computing, and conclude with some guiding principles for future computing platform designs.
